Re: A person's name is a misnomer
I have a couple of identical twin cousins who, for much of their young life, were indistinguishable to the rest of the family. Even their parents couldn't tell them apart. In fact, my aunt once told me that she wasn't entirely sure that their names were even correct as she had no idea which was whic...

Re: A person's name is a misnomer
Another example can be found in evolution. A population of reptiles accrues traits over time that more resemble a dinosaur than a reptile so we call them dinosaurs. Over more time, a population grows feathers of such a type that enables it to glide, then to fly. Finally a human domesticates a popula...

Well the paradox is like this, you have a ship. You replace one plank, you'd say its still the same ship? Replace two, still the same? Replace all planks, still the same? In case of humans its even more complicated, not only the plank change all the time, but the ship grows, its appearance changes,...

Re: A person's name is a misnomer
The us that awakens each morning is an epiphenomenal entity that arises from the electrochemical processes of the cognitive part of the brain, which, in turn, are dependent on its anatomy and physiology. To use a computer analogy, we are a program that gets rebooted each morning. However, the entity...

Re: Civil rights for animals.
Speaking of things ecological, I've been composting kitchen scraps with earthworms for a few months now. Thus far, I've gotten about 40 pounds of nice compost from an input of kitchen garbage, dry yard waste and old newspapers. My worm community has tripled in size too. When the weather warms I'm go...

As you go up a trophic level you generally lose 10% of the energy stored in the previous level. As little as 10% of the energy is passed onto the next tropic level, you mean. We lose 90% of it. Correct, I forgot to reverse numbers when I edited my post to present the statement differently. In gener...

@iwillspankyou notification I explained why I thought that the Antarctic ice was increasing and that it was because of global warming. I also linked two original data sources from NASA, rather than a YouTube video. However, I could say that ice is frozen water and you would decry prejudice on my pa...

60 is not that old. Hell, she was the same age as me! I hope I age as well as my neighbor across the street. She is 95 and was out shoveling snow the other day. Just goes to show you that riches and fame don't matter much where death is concerned. Even if you live in a country with the best doctors ...

basing his opinion off of one anomaly and ignoring the other gargantuan tons of evidence. And what opinion is that? I taught environmental science and ecology in college and know a good deal more about it than anyone here. I'm merely stating the facts. 1. There is much more to the issue of climate ...

George Michael wasn't a role model by any stretch of the imagination but I have to admit that I liked some of his music, maybe because it was popular when I first got out of the Army and was in college. Dead at 53, probably from his sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Re: What charity should we donate to? (Basement Insight Charity Telethon 2016)
Raise money for the prize pool of the FFA tournament you're going to run. Goodspeed has the right idea here. Donations to large charities just get lost in the noise, not to mention that even with the best of charities you still are helping to pay the six-figure salaries of the CEO and administratio...

Re: climate change - how to go forward
I think solar energy is the most promising one. Solar power is beginning to look like an economically viable alternative to many companies, what with the decreasing cost of photovoltaic panels and other solar-power technologies being refined. However, not all countries have areas where there is a c...

Imagine 10 or 100 times the weather catastrophes we addressed this year - imagine we cannot longer grow crops cos its all "gone by the wind". Imagine all coast cities are flooded with 100 times the magnitude of Cathrina to Louisiana! I think that you may be watching too many disaster movi...

hones thoughts on the way forward. Well, one thing that global warming is probably going to do is to open up the Northwest Passage to commercial sea traffic (one ship has already made it through without icebreaker support). Therefore, if you want to set up a legacy for your great-grandchildren you ...

Re: climate change - how to go forward
Regardless of the occasional ice sheet breaking free, there is still a net increase in ice accumulation in Antarctica. an increase in Antarctic snow accumulation that began 10,000 years ago is currently adding enough ice to the continent to outweigh the increased losses from its thinning glaciers. m

Those who say that global warming is going to melt all the ice and and cause sea levels to rise and flood all of our cities oftentimes don't understand the big picture. They exclaim that if the Antarctic ice sheet melts, sea levels will rise 60 meters. However, is this really going to happen? Did yo...

Re: What would you say to Nietzsche?
I'm not prescribing moral codes, I'm describing them. Essentially, I'm saying that what works, works. Think twice before you go trying to change things that have allowed a lineage to survive since life began. That is, unless you know (not believe) that you have the mental capacity to see beyond the ...

Re: Words that should be words but aren't
Until recently, it took several years for a newly-coined word to gain general acceptance. Now, with social media, hundreds of new terms and phrases become commonly used. If you want to coin something just find a concept that is not precisely represented by a known word in English, make up a term and...
