Hey guys, so I originally posted this bug as a map issue for Mencino here: viewtopic.php?f=158&t=6281&start=25#p159013
However, I was subsequently notified by Riki that this is actually not a problem of his map, but of EP itself.
I was able to verify this to be a problem on all map types while using EP (standard ES maps, custom ESOC maps, UI maps). The bug does not occur on RE.

So, around the middle portion of any map, you cannot select your villagers with a dragbox while on EP. I consider this to be a serious bug that should be patched preferably before the tournament is in full swing. This can literally decide games. The issue is only made worse by the fact that Mendocino is first in the tournament map pool, and that is a map with huge emphasis on playing around the middle mine. Please, someone should really take a took into this!

But is that an issue only when the „Easy Drag Military" option is enabled, or does it happen regardless of this particular setting?

Well I identified the reason for it, and presumed he was the one who came up with this unusual idea to use the bat-target mechanism to test what appears to be a secret ESOC *** ****** system (ant picking). Could be wrong.

In any case it's a simple fix to either remove it from the patch or just re-position it at the edge of the map, as the UI maps do. There's other problems that will remain for Player 1, but meh.

Yes, it must be enabled, I mention that in the linked thread. But many/most players use this setting, right?

Oh, sorry, I didn't remember that. I'm not quite sure, I was using it for some time, but now I don't and I can say it's better. It's a bit off-topic, but it's just easier to select vills that are stuck among military troops, which happens a lot of times actually (think defending sieged TC). So, fortunately, it doesn't affect the likes of me. But it's certainly concerning! Thanks for bringing the attention to this problem!

What happens if you press "alt" when trying to drag the villagers in the middle of the map? Does that allow you to select them? Could be a stop-gap solution.

That would be ideal, but not sure if it's possible. They currently already are "non-selectable", the game just selects a random tree/mine/hunt/whatever gaia stuff. Perhaps tag them as villagers instead of military units, that could be an easy fix if it works?

Apparently, on Indonesia as player 1 you can see the middle point of the map even when you don't have any units there. Just like a constant spyglass.

Where's the fix? This bug still negatively impacts about 50% of games I play, including tournament matches. Other non-military units such as cows and envoys are also affected by this bug, it's immensely annoying.

Took a quick look on the code dealing with this..
What is the purpose of the "EP ELO" object?
Why does it need to be assigned to an actual player?

Commenting out the following lines fixes the bug, but perhaps breaks something else:

Seeing how this is written, the bug probably only affects the hosting player, though I haven't tested that.
The function seems like it should be dealing with mercs, but in some obscure way unlike the original code by ES. Where is the actual merc logic? Seems like my mercs were enabled correctly even after I commented out the aforementioned lines.
