Simply p2p architecture. A central server is more efficient way to connect players. That's how sc2 works (atleast partially as far as I know). Also it allows for anticheat systems.

isnt server side connection going to give unfair advantages to those who have OP PCs and internet?

Correct. With peer to peer (aoe3's setup) the game is run on a shared connection. To keep the game in sync, everyone will have to slow down to the slowest player.

With a server based structure (so not how aoe runs) the game basically runs on the server while your pc tries to catch up/stay synced. If your interent/pc are poor you yourself will suffer from it but the game wont slow down.

Method two has some downsides (most importantly cost of the servers, no decent cross regional play and some others) but is generally considered the superior method nowadays. Unfortunately theres not really a possible/viable workaround to play aoe on server connection so we're stuck with lag.

rent out the entire floor of a hotel for a few weeks and play out all games on LAN. Problem solved

We appreciate your donations and your thoughts greatly. We will be addressing this moving forward.

Future tournaments will have specific rules to empower tourmament admins to remove players who consistently lag.

I know for a fact you can lag the game intentionally at any time with a certain hotkey setup (involves attack move). This effect increases as the players' connection to each other worsens. I feel this would be especially true in an observer match with multiple connections. This can also be done unintentionally if the player is unaware that the cause is their hotkey setup. The effect is also magnified the larger the armies are, which in kynisie games is not uncommon. I'm not witch hunting but stating statements which, to the extent of my knowledge and testing, I know to be true.

"The effects" result in the game temporarily freezing, as was seen in many battles, and delayed chat between the players, so that messages may only be sent/received after the freezing has ended. Outside of these moments, the game should run smoothly, unless the attack move is utilized in this certain hotkey setup (which rarely happens outside of battles, you don't atk move a tres guardian). This explains why it might only happen during battles. Regular command lag and dropped frames should be independent of this hotkey glitch and entirely on players' connections.

IF this is the case, I entirely doubt kynisie is doing it intentionally.

If it is not the case, It's 2016. The game has been out for over a decade. In a (semi) professional setting such as these $1000 tournaments, it doesn't seem too much to ask to have a computer and Internet capable of handling the game in manageable lag. Perhaps the admins should be more strict moving forward.

Kynesie said he played with reset hotkeys, although I consider that to be nothing but a lie. Its probably this thing you describe and Ive even notified kynesie of it. Im kinda starting to feel that kynesie does not really see this as a problem, given the minimal effort he has put in solving it.

I don't see much good coming out of this thread.

I think there are a few legitimate concerns which were raised in the thread, to which _H2O responded. Let's not go too deep into accusations and all of that, nothing good will come out of it. Afaik players and admins are working out these issues so that a correct and fair response is possible in the future. No need to single out certain people.

I just hope DE is not going to implement all of the EP changes. Right now it is a big clusterfuck.
