It's not useless, it's lame shit, makes units path so bad and you can camp forever in this because pillars can't be mortared easily. Just standard nr 55 garbage

Not sure if I'm missing a reference or something, but this is REALLY bad for the defender. Mortar splash dmg will wreck nearby units. I know this is the case for units next to walls being mortared. I'm not 100% about splash dmg from pillars, but I assume it's the same case as with walls.
Really bad for pathing, really bad for defender misclicking, really bad for splash dmg. Only upside as far as I can tell is that it will force attacker to clear pillars before being able to make an advancing forward base, and in that case, you are basically preparing to fail rather then focus on holding your ground and/or pushing.

Mortars don't have splash damage. The only case where they can hit units is when your units stand under a gate. It actually works with cuirs also and probs other stuff, it's a bug I think.
Those pillars just make it impossible for your cav to kill RI, so you can camp hard.

The main problem with using town dance with Aztec is that their units suck. It's far better (and OP on Orin maybe) to just wall regularly.The big problem with that game is the Iro player couldn't get any of his fat little units out. In NR55 especially you need to maintain 200 pop, not just out, but actually fighting. Unless you are port you can't do that with pillars :(. IMO Aztec town dance on Orin is more OP for teammates cause unless you are good you can't push.

Yeah you need a decent ranged civ for it to be effective. Hand cav is very bad in NR55 anyway

Maybe if the guy is hardcore camping that's true but in a normal high lvl ori 55 game mixing ~10 cav can be really good against guys that go pure range. Basically you're putting him on the back foot, forcing him to make goons and pushing his army back, which in turn makes culv micro a lot more difficult for the guy not making any hand cav. This is true in general treaty but even more so on orinoco because the inability to make flank walls on the crossing will open more opportunities to flank his artillery. The initial trades might not be 100% cost effective but the long term effect of forcing anticav and keeping him on the back foot will usually net more resources. Obviously if he has 20+ goon handcav becomes bad, but then you'll be destroying him in skirm trades.
