The Richmond and Danville Railroad was an important link between Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate States of America capital, and the rest of the Confederacy. One of the duties of the US Cavalry under General George Stoneman, was to disrupt supplies and communications by sabotaging the tracks. The cavalrymen would heat a rail and then bend it into a circle, rendering it unusable. These were known as Sherman's neckties.
The siege of Petersburg and Richmond resulted in severe hardships for civilian and soldier alike. Finally, on April 3rd 1865, Richmond fell. On May the 10th, Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, was captured, effectively ending any hope of reorganizing the CSA government.
The “Robert E Lee” was a steamboat that carried passengers and cargo on the Mississippi after the Civil War. In the summer of 1870, the Robert E Lee made the St. Louis to New Orleans run in a record time of 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes, a commercial ship record that stands to this day. Poor ex-soldiers, especially those who had been paid in now useless CSA script, would oftentimes earn money by chopping wood for steamboat fuel and leaving it stacked along the riverbank.
Although Lincoln set up the process of reconstruction, corrupt officials oftentimes lined their own pockets, taking the best for themselves, rather than helping the people of the South. Times were especially hard for families whose husbands, fathers and sons never returned from the war.
Joan Baez butchered the lyrics of this fine historical song.

He can't help himself-- he has a degree in Historical Song Interpretation and has spent the last 20 years of his life travelling across the United States doing consulting work.

No, but I did once spent a summer visiting most of the cities that Marty Robbins sang about in his Gunfighter ballads and Trail Songs.
