Re: New laptop

Post by Dolan »

The first three are similar and seem fine for the price (nvidia gtx 1060, 8gb ram, i7 6700HQ, SSD included).

Pros: a lot of power packed in an under 1500 portable.
Cons: plastic case, videoram is about 3GB so it's ok but nothing great, screen is nothing to talk about (average)

This model is ok but in terms of videoram and graphic performance it gets beat by the Alienware 15, that was just launched in October. The Alienware has 8 friggin gigs of videoram which will be capable of playing more gpu-intensive games.

So, if you don't mind the ayylmao logo on the front and the hefty chassis, you could put the Alienware 15 in balance with the MSI models (which all have basically similar specs)

LE. Actually, A 15 has four possible configurations and the ones under 1500 have 6 GB of video ram.

Another pro or con, depending on how you look at it, is that now Alienware belongs to Dell so they're the ones building them now.
Some people would grumble about this, others would cheer it.

LLE I'm not sure you can find that Alienware 15 model launched in October 2016 for sale in Europe rn.
Most prob, you'll find older models.

hmm where did you see about the 3gb video ram? is that the ram in the videocard? dont they all have the same gtx1060? the alienware 15 has the 1070, which indeed has 8gb, but the 1060 has 6gb normally, 3gb is the toned down version which only a few laptops have, none of which i have selected.

The SSD is easy to add, the video shows that the bottom side has an easy-to-remove lid, which exposes all the empty SSD (M.2) slots. You can just buy any M.2 SSD and add it yourself, at whichever price you want.

So, imo, for these laptops that are easily serviceable through removable back covers, not having a pre-installed SSD is not a deal-breaker.

Yeah, well, imported electronics are always expensive in the UK, especially if the pound is still valued higher than the dollar and the euro.

If and when this model comes to Europe, the 1100 $ one could be up for sale for about 1300-1499 euros, VAT included. It would still have superior gpu (6gb vram), but no SSD (which, as I said you could easily install yourself).

Abso-fucking-lutely amazing price for this offer. You could send someone from any of these locations (http://www.frys.com/ac/storeinfo/storel ... csfooter_H) to buy it for you and send it by mail, since even if you include taxes it's insanely cheap for the value of its components.

Having an OLED screen should be the first priority. Won't be cheap though.

Not a fan of OLED. Coz the "O" in OLED stands for organic and everything organic has a short lifetime.

That's only to force you to keep buying new screens so that organic companies stay in business.

Green parts mark the positives, red parts mark the negatives, yellow the somewhat positive but still not great option.

Notice that this model of Dell, which is from the same series as the one I posted before, has beefed up specs: an i7 CPU, 4GB video ram, both an SSD and an HDD, a 4K screen. But it's still made of plastic. Which may or may not prove durable over the years (depending on the quality of the plastic).

Another interesting choice is the Lenovo, which has an aluminium case and the best speakers and audio system. But it comes with a slow HDD and no SDD (you'd have to add it). And 8GB of RAM when others come with 16.

So, there are lots of trade-offs here, but surely for the extra 300 you can see a lot more power and, in some cases, better build quality.

I wouldn't make the choice for you, though, don't want to be responsible for it. :P

Is this an actual website where you can compare specs? I'm looking to buy a laptop as well and am not the most tech savvy.

@rickytickitembo
No, I think I made it by hand from different reviews, iirc.

There are some sites that can help you with some basic comparisons:

are we looking at the same thing? or is the offer already over. because its 1600 dollars, and thats almost the same price as the medion erazer or msi leopard pro, which is 1600 euros but has gtx1060 gb card, 17.3 screen and newer i7 core

The offer is over, it was going for 460 bucks, I think, if you picked it up in one of their stores (you could have sent a friend). Obviously, people made a run for it.
T'was a steal.

damn, yes that was an insane offer lol. how could they be selling it for a third of the price :O (tho it seems to me that 1600 regular price seems a bit steep)

Could've been a sale or inventory liquidation, no idea. The site has lots of deals like that.

Problem is you have to be based in the US to get em, most of them aren't available for online purchasing.
