Japan unveils AI girlfriend

What could this mean for the future of the human race? Will this compound Japan's population problems? Are traditional relationships even relevant any more?

"Her" is a great movie.
I felt depressed watching this commercial.

Time is wise and our wounds seem to heal to the rhythm of aging,
But our past is a ghost fading out that at night it’s still haunting.

10 years. I smile when I think back about that goofy but clearly brilliant 11 year old.Laurence Drake wrote:
Anyway on topic, we will all have personal assistants like that perhaps sooner than we think. Of course leave it to Japan to turn it into a virtual girlfriend.

Theory: In fifty years all children in developed countries will be born in test tubes. Traditional sexual relationships will no longer be practised, and social norms will promote non-binary gender identities as a lifestyle choice. Not that any of these choices will matter, since people will be too deeply immersed in their virtual worlds to confront real people in face-to-face situations except in the few cases when this becomes necessary. Western civilisation will fall into decay, and new industrial powers will emerge in Africa and South Asia. These younger powers will eventually become locked in a war for control over increasingly scarce resources as population growth within their borders spirals out of control, and the number of people living south of the ever-expanding Sahara desert exceeds 3 billion. Western countries, inward-looking and self-concerned following the isolationist policies of Empress Ivanka Trump, will simply look on. The rich inhabitants of the world will become enigmatic observers of the major conflict zones and, using their advanced imaging software and drone technology, will vicariously experience the lives of the needy and impoverished through virtual reality, and will do so voluntarily in order to regain the sense of urgency and meaning that their own lives have long since lost. The conclusion to this state of affairs will be outlined in a new film directed by James Cameron set to be released in 2025 following the completion of the ninth instalment of the Avatar saga. Who knows, maybe by then I'll finally have my shit together and will no longer feel the compulsive need to shitpost on the community forum for a game I haven't played in 10 years.

This machine is wasting it's user's time on a chat with non-sentient being, what is an equivalent to having an animal, with the key difference that it fools one's emotions even more. Moreover, it actually tries to alter the user's lifestyle, what is totally absurd and annoying (good comparison to a nagging mother). When it provides information, it is basically a voice search combined with preprogrammed information-feeding apps, so nothing new either. It shines a lot, so I guess it is energy hungry. Also, it is not matched to our subcosciousness enough to let it take a physical form (don't mind technological barrier) and to satisfy our physical needs. Even if it was, it would still be very inefficient at producing babies, for instance.
Overall: a personal assistant, in the sense of a tool next after smartphone apps—> a no-brainer, although for people who like silence, a robotic voice would be just unnerving, so I for instance would pass until brain-computer wiring becomes available.
Potential life partner for smart people -> not before we completely alter our genetical programming... and when we'll be able to do that... it will be more useful to delete feelings of loneliness altogether. Of course it would be sold to some dumbos, like everything ever was. Smart people then would get only smarter, and dumb only dumber—what is fine by me, there are potential advantages of that.
All things considered, we need to realise, that this gadget and movies like "Her" will be outdated curiosities quite quickly, sent into history of retro-futurism, right next to the rocket/atomic/i-pod everything scenarios.
Edit: If it sounds butthurt to you, then you must be a spy of Skynet. kappa?

But who would buy it? If I saw that in someone's house I would assume they were total losers.
@Laurence Drake the artificial births in search of perfection have already begun, in certain Nordic countries i heard 95% of autistic/gene defective children were aborted before birth
