Video game addiction
Do you think that it's possible to be addicted to video games? What about books? Other entertainment?
If so, do you think it's a problem in our society? Have you experienced it?

Re: Video game addiction
Yes it is possible to be addicted to literally anything from being a pro procrastinator to a workaholic, addiction to video games is a spontaneous process, you play it then you want to explore it but you don't get enough of it so you explore it more. I have also seen people addicted to books- taking it almost everywhere and reading it whenever possible, movie- one of acquaintance watched 4 movies back to back in same theater and other kind of media like TV and such.
Problem with society- yes i think it is because when you are addicted to something(not considering drugs here, its too extreme) you don't get to give your time to people you care about, depending upon the phase of life of the addict, addiction may have little to drastic(in some cases fatal) effects on his/her family.
On a side note, what's up with your signature? You change the numbers every now and then.

Re: Video game addiction
I think actual addiction to video games is very rare and vastly overstated. I can see why it's easy for the past generation to think their children are addicted to video games because kids tend to like games and video games are both accessible and immersive. Also, the past generation themselves never had the option to play them as a child so it's hard for them to relate. What I always figured is really going on is that kids have a lot of time on their hands, and for many of them video games are an excellent way of spending that time. A kid spending 5 hours a day playing games may seem unhealthy to a parent, but from the kid's perspective: what other options are there which would bring the same kind of excitement? Sitting around watching the TV shows their parents feel like watching? Reading is an option for some, but boring to many, and it's unlikely one would spend 5 hours a day on it. School work? Naw. Socializing with other kids? Yeah. But that's not for everyone.
I spent an insane amount of time playing games as a kid, but I never thought of it as an addiction and still don't. It was just how I preferred to spend my time. I didn't like social events, and there was rarely anything good on TV. I read, but only before bed.
An addiction is something you can't stop doing. I never had trouble stopping for days or even weeks (in case of a vacation) at a time, so it never felt like an addiction. It was fun though, to be sure.
My point being: A person's favourite way to spend their free time does not equal addiction. I never quite bought into gaming addiction being as big of a problem as people make it out to be. Sure there are addicts out there, but not many.

When I lived in Shanghai I often saw kids outside the internet cafe's - sleeping for a few hours before going back in playing for 20+ hours. Media also "often" reported reported death, mostly caused by dehydration.

It becomes a problem when people begin to prefer video games over face-to-face interaction. I made a thread about this recently, you guys might be interested in checking it out.

Re: Video game addiction
I suppose the video game has to be really entertaining and engaging for one to get addicted. I don't think I've ever experienced video game, I tend to play in bursts where at the end of each burst I get sick of the game. I will say something for internet addiction, it's not hard to get addicted to it in the sense that there's so many new things to read about on the internet or be entertained by.

You never get what you want.
If you feel irresistible urges to play (addiction), then stop.
If it's controllable and not too powerful, go.

Re: Video game addiction
I think I remember playing Runescape 12 hours a day when I was a kid. Most games nowadays are pretty crap though, so a gaming addiction is probably just very extreme escapism.

I just came across this article about video games. Interesting. A quote:
I wouldnāt trade my life or my past for any other, but there have been times when Iāve wanted to swap the writing life and the frigid self-consciousness it compels for the gamerās striving and satisfaction, the infinite sense of passing back and forth (being an āambiguous conduit,ā in Janaskieās Āpoignant phrase) between number and body. The appeal canāt be that much different for nonwriters subjected to similar social or economic pressures, or for those with other ambitions, maybe especially those whose ambitions have become more dream state than plausible, actionable future. True, there are other ways to depress mental turnout. But I donāt trust my body with intoxicants; so far as music goes, Iāve found few listening experiences more gratifying or revealing than hearing an album on repeat while performing some repetitive in-game task. Gaming offers the solitude of writing without the strain of performance, the certitude of drug addiction minus its permanent physical damage, the elation of sports divorced from the bodyās mortality. And, perhaps, the ritual of religion without the dogma.
