Also it is a disruptive advantage because of break points (e.g. TC needs 3 shots as someone pointed out) and because upgrades stack up on high base stats. Sepoy are very much like old ashigaru except for speed.
They are kinda equal to musks and musks a bit almost unnoticable way better. They are 4% i guess. You can test it in scenario. 20 sepoy vs 24 musks. Sepoys only win with 4 units but its because its totally maximize its damage output vs musk with its 25 damage (casue musks has 150 health).
It's historical to make Sepoys strong. Indians were a strong nations in the beginning ages and not easy to be rushed. Even British Feared them. While they become weak in the later period. They became mainly defensive. Just the same way the Sepoys (main Indian unit) become an average unit in the late games.

If only aoe3 logic worked like this, Ports would be an early game civ too!

If so they should have a red coat like Nanib. Every British Sepoy had Redcoat. You may search over internet. Aoe3 Sepoy Represents Sipahi ( Indian Warriors )

At the beginning of Colonial Age they already had a large colony but very unstable. This is the reason why the Portuguese were given an extra villager compared to others in the early stages. They also had a good navy. But still they were never fully successful in colonization. There empires broke once other colonies rose. That's why the Portuguese generally try to get to the Fortress Age quickly due to the fact that they are very strong beyond the Colonial Age. Since they were first explorers, Portuguese can have three Explorers with a Home City Card to represent there expertise.
