Pr ladder ends in 2038?
I was looking at the record thing that shows who has the highest rating etc, and it says it goes until 2038....what does this mean exactly?

Okay I guess 64 bit systems dont have this problem because they have a timespawn if the 32 bit system time spawn squared, so roughly 70^2 years which would be 4900 years, something no piece of current equipment will outlive. That leaves me the question, why is time being coded in this odd fashion?

where do you get this information from? changing the time_t datatype to a 64 bit int would make it have a way bigger max value, probably some billion years or sth....with each additional binary digit the size gets more than twice as big as before, and you have 32 additional binary digits.. EDIT: thinking about it, in this case actually a lot more than dbl of its previous size with each additional bit, since this is referring to years, and not a binary number

i think the problem is that you can't change the value because its used in numerous functions of programs(e.g. for the generation of random numbers), which might totally fuck up existing programs, having time coded as one binary number is pretty useful for programming to generate random numbers etc, remember that you want any datatype to be as small as possible to not waste memory...

the problem still exists because the datatype time_t is still 32Bit, and therefore has still the same size,
by saying nowadays 64 bit system are common i was simply pointing out that you could eventually use a 64Bit size for this datatype for new stuff(or sth), which would move the problem some billion years into the future...as written above you cant just change the size of a type that has been used some million times in programs and expect everything to still keep working fine..
EDIT: actually on nowadays system/hardware this seems possible(having time_t as a 64bit datatype), so the problem just remains for 32bit hardware/programs, i dont know enough about this probably...

Wait did I play too much aoe instead of maths? 2^62 = (2^31) ^2 so if 2^31 ~ 70 years then 2^62 ~ 4900 years? So 2^63 would be 10000 years?

You can't talk in years, you need to apply the calculus to seconds, then apply it to years. Otherwise the number you square is too small since its the number of years and not of seconds.
With 64 bits it would be 2^63, just divide this by 365*24*3600 to convert the seconds into years, and you will find the result

Didn't watch the video linked here, but most new systems developed aren't typically with 32-bit time stamps. The only reason people do or have done this is lack of foresight, or perhaps a willing trade-off. Implementing a 64-bit timestamp on a 32-bit system would be much less efficient, which could be relevant especially in embedded systems contexts. It would also be more complicated to implement.
