Useless units?
Just curious,
Which unit/s have you rarely or never used? and why?

Alot I guess from civs I don't often play, but from those I play. Spies. I do see their purpose, but I don't seem to come around to it.

Interesting. I use them against Japan mus., but still not sure if it cost effective!

To kill the hero's? Don't they just cloud away.

Spies have very high multipliers against heroes, so they just need to touch to kill them.

Spies find a use against melee mercs: hackapells, stradiots, landsknechts, ronins, mamelukes, ninjas. Usually ranged mercs kill them very fast. Also you need to trap with stealth mode because cav mercs can run and spies are garbage against any regular unit. And their bonus against Natives is not big enough.

Cuirassiers, because they are slow, have a low attack, take a lot of population space, and cost a lot.
Pay more attention to detail.

Halbs, grens, rajputs, samurai, yabu, and those Sioux cav that get stronger with numbers (won't bother trying to spell their name).
I guess some of these units have their (very) niche uses but I'm a fairly standard player, so unless I'm not playing seriously you'll never see me make any of the above units.

I thought about trying the spy out and an occassion arose. A german opponent made renegados, so I send for spies at britisch consulate (india) and attacked. Since the have a 5 attack *20 vs mercs I thought at least to get some of his 10+ mercs. Not one died! So I went into single player (maybe they got shot to soon) and tried it vs comp, but also there against 3 renegados they went down.
Renegados have 110 hitpoints, they should die in 2 strikes. At least one should have gone down. Or do spies only work against a shipped mercenary?

Re: Useless units?
A common mistake people usually do is to believe outlaws are mercenaries. THEY ARE NOT MERCS , any age II saloon or monastery unit is an outlaw and no outlaw is a merc. The German card 'Improved Mercenaries' doesn't improve them, and in age IV in the saloon you have an upgrade for outlaw wokou and maratha, which doesn't affect mercs either.Asateo wrote:P i k i l i c wrote:Spies find a use against melee mercs: hackapells, stradiots, landsknechts, ronins, mamelukes, ninjas. Thx, that explains alot. Though now there is even less use for spies then I thought.

iirc technically they aren't mercs, but outlaw units, so spies dont work against them
