All maps/standard maps

Post by Asateo »

Usually I put "standard maps" when playing a game, to allow some variaty, but recently I thought why not more and play "all maps". Then I ended up with no hunt on pampas.
So my question is: are "standard maps" better balanced then "all maps"? Or was that just a coincidence (sometimes on standard you get not hunt aswell)?
Northwestern territories for example looks nice, if it's balanced...

Yes, standard maps were chosen as a better balanced map pool.

Standard Maps are for the most part better, but resource distribution seems to be equally awful on the majority of RE maps. The ones not included in the aforementioned pool were most likely regarded as less competitive in terms of their design (Caribbeans, Amazonia, Pampas). On the other hand, amongst them there are some very decent ones, like Northwest Territory, Rockies, or even Amazonia, as it has a lot of natural resources.

Yeah, I like NW-territory and rockies. One of the reasons I was considering 'all maps'. Little RE maps have 'private' TP-lines, like NWT.

I mean, All Maps include water-heavy ones — is there a reason not to pick them?

Off topic but I really don't like playing on standard maps. Map plays a huge role in what civ I'll pick, and standard kinda forces me to play only France or maybe Dutch because my other civs can be royally screwed on certain maps.

A rough estimate says that around half of the maps are either water or non-TP ones, so I guess it ultimately chooses the most TP-reliant civs. Maybe France then, actually? Or, if we take the resource aspect into consideration, perhaps Brits, but then again, they're not bothered by the aforementioned half of the maps. :?
