What are your thoughts/ideas on the next Telethon?

Post by fightinfrenchman »

I'm very pleased with the results of the 2018 Telethon, which ran for 2 days straight and raised $3300, but we're already hard at work planning on what next year will hold.

We've already confirmed that it will indeed be a 96 hour-long stream. I'd like to open up to the community the chance to make suggestions on how we can improve the stream next year.

However, I do have one important question: how would you feel if the stream also included gameplay of AoE 1, 2, and Online? I figure this would help pass the time as well as increase the potential audience. Thoughts?

perhaps for the next event organize a schedule, maybe like a sign-up where you have hour or two-hourly slots and you make a thread for that. then folks on the forums can sign up for specific slots. then say you might have aiz post that he can play on friday at 9pm-10pm with garja. prince and somppu post they can play saturday at 8am. and you have a basement treaty scheduled for sunday 3-5pm. would make it easy to see what's coming up on the stream, and that might spike viewership around the time of specific events

and ofc i think playing alternate versions of age would be great!

I think you can improve the format a bit.

- Add a facecam as that really helps getting more viewers.
- Make a schedule so people know what they are watching after tuning in.
- Think about some kind of mini-tournament. Get 8 people and let them play vs each other. You can spread the matches out over the 96 hours.
- Some more information about Doctors Without Borders would be good. Also explain why you chose that goal.
- Why not include a small timer?

Yeah less asking for donations is better. When I tuned in, I almost felt obligated to donate, it shouldn't feel like that.

It would be interesting to organize mini day long tournaments. Maybe like a 4 or 8 person tournaments that are all BO3 games. Add weird variables (random civs, random maps... etc.)

Something different that people would want to tune in to.

96 hours!? Hopefully you'll take turns because I'm pretty sure it's legitimately dangerous to stay awake for that long. Streaming AoE2 as well as AoE1DE (which will hopefully be out by then) for like 24 hours or less would probably be good. Also, more treaty.

I think you guys did a great job passing the time on stream. Sometimes you had to resort to wololo or cards or other scenarios which is fine, but you can leave that as a backup to your pre-made schedule and fill up any gaps that way. I definitely agree that including all age games, a schedule, face cam, and timer would enhance the streaming experience. Perhaps you could make a video detailing why you chose that particular foundation and include the link in the bio of the twitch channel or drop it in the chat from time to time. I feel it will intice people to donate because they will have a better understanding of what their money is being used for.

Increase the intervals at which you remind about donating.

-make a schedule
-list with challenges (only samurai etc)
-96h is maybe too long
-less scenarios

I would like to see a lot more interaction with the viewers and especially the donators.

-Make a !timer command to see how far you are into the telethon (if no on-screen timer is available).
-Let people who donate a certain amount (for example 10+ dollars) pick a scenario/map to be played. You can also invite them to play with you.
-Schedule, very important for long livestreams. You have to know when is a good time to tune in for you, especially with multiple games and gamemodes.

Never stop goading peoples into parting with their money. In fact create a 96 hour long text-to-speech which will play in the background telling them to donate.

Because it could lead to me thinking nahh let's not tune in because otherwise they are gonna ask me again and then I feel bad when I don't donate.

This is an unwritten rule: You should not ask for donations, you should deserve it.

You can however ask for it imo, but not too often.

+1
but add more info about the charity when asking for donations. You also draw funds out of the same community that funds the tournament so perhaps lowering goals is fair towards esoc. I have donated more to you than to esoc now.

This is part of why we want to expand to include the communities of other AoE games

I think much of it is written from the perspective of people who mostly watched the finale. We were asking for donations at the end because we specifically streamed extra long in order to get more donations.
