AoE3 makes me really upset

Genuinely haven’t played in like months. I sometimes sign on and just to see what’s going on. I find it all so sad, I love this game so much and like no one is on. I think ESOC have done a great job but why do the numbers decline.. why can’t we attract new players. Why aren’t people likening this game!? It’s my favourite. I just get so upset seeing the game in this state. The truth is AoE4 properly won’t be what I like and it all ends. Is this just me..?

Well I guess it`s impossible that the definitive edition not to bring in more numbers, seeing as the game is dead atm.
I think one of the issues is that the fans of the first 2 either stayed on them 2nd one or just got too old to keep on playing it. Of course there`s plenty of other issues with the game itself and other stuff and such and things....

I doubt it. We're being too hopeful for the DE. From what aoe1:de was we'll just get some higher-res assets and like 1-2 bug fixes. Not to mention being a Windows store exclusive will seriously cut into the numbers.

Of course AoE3 is a good game. But in my opinion, the gaming community shifted its focus away from strategy games like 10 years ago. While the total number of games on the planet is rising strongly, the fraction of people playing strategy games seems to have declined. At the same moment, I have the feeling that the market for strategy games has been diversified and specialized. 20 years ago, there were just a handful of games which basically everybody played. Today you have much more choice as frequently new games are published and many different game designs exist.

For a game which is 13 years old, AoE3 even has quite nice graphics. But new players are usually recruited in the mid-teens until early 20's. These people were far too young to know the game when it was published. This is a serious disadvantage in game competition, since people tend to focus more on "new products" in general. This is also why the new 'definitive editions' are published - they raise visibility due to being "newly published".

Seriously, not this again... TAD numbers aren't declining and AoE3 is among top 10 active RTS games (although RTS as a whole is not doing too well admittedly).

Imo the definitive edition could bring some more players, but this is a 13 years old game after all, it will never be "alive" again unfortunately, considering that AoE2 was its predecessor. The definitive edition will be probably screwed up though, so don't keep your hopes too high. Maybe new official content would bring more players in but the quality would surely be inferior to the original ES standard, so that is a false hope as well.
Sometimes i wonder about how will the game be in 20-30 years... Maybe some of us will be still playing it, maybe we will all have switched to age of empires V or VI, maybe PC games will be a whole different thing from now. Who knows.
