So we're about to hit a big spike with the winter steam sale and then the average while go down, Spike with the summer sale, and continue in this infinite loop until finally there are 0 players....

That's a nice graphical representation of the data. However, it's not exactly ringing a death knell. While it does show that the game is declining in online numbers, it also shows that it's still about half as popular as it was. The recent sharp decline in users can almost certainly be directly attributed to the server outages we've been having these last few months. The next Steam sale should kick numbers up and if the servers stay fixed users online should be maintained at a decent level.
Here are some things you can do to ensure new users stay:

That graph shows the average amount of people, so 7000+ could have been possible

Wow, that''s almost the same list as I wrote of the official forums some years ago. I like the list and do fully agree.

I never said it happened, but the average has occasionally been close to 5000 so it doesnt seem unreasonable.

Aoe3 did something wrong at the start. The influx of players that seem to never have played the game, and the longevity of it is extremely remarkable for a game that never hit averages above 6000.

I made and posted this graph which is a graph of the different ESO populations overtime along with a trend line showing the decrease in total population.

I remember that sharp dip in TWC population when TAD came out. Even though the expansion was pretty pricey when it was new almost all the TWC players migrated over to it just as soon as they could get their hands on a copy.
TAD was released officially October 23, 2007 but, interestingly, TAD games start showing up in the data on Oct 1st 2007. These must have been ES and BHG employees testing the expansion on the servers. For the first month of the release, TWC numbers held steady but soon TAD surged ahead an by mid 2008 it was very hard to find a TWC game.
It's still interesting though that so many did, and still do, play only the basic game, especially as AOE III is distributed as the Complete Collection now.

it also doesnt really show the talent pool dropping even faster than the population

This is not the average. This is the maximum POP month by month. So the ESO population has never reached the 5000.

For a while there was a glitch in the reporting of numbers, which is probably where people came up with those high estimates. I can recall seeing numbers as high as 10,000 online but this was just because those who were going offline were not being subtracted. The max ever online was 4,856 on Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 2 PM.

And condensed it down to average users each day, I dont know how he did that but he posted it in the same old thread that I originally posted that graph in. I simply took the dates and numbers and graphed them in excel, added colours and a trend line and voila.
