My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
By request, I am sharing what hotkeys I use in TAD, so here we go.
The essential thing is that units which are the same, but differ from civilization to civilization, naturally share the same hotkey (e.g. Train Sepoy and Train Musketeer). This is possible thanks to "Allow Conflicts" which doesn't exist in vanilla.
Finding hotkeys (this is magic right here):
- Spacebar: Find idle worker
- Mouse button: Find Explorer/Monk/War Chief
- Caps lock: Find Town Center
- A: Find Barracks/Blockhouse/War Academy/War Hut
- S: Find Stable/Corral/Caravanserai
- D: Find Artillery Foundry/Castle
Settler/Villager/Coureur des Bois/Settler Wagon hotkeys:
- Q: Build House/Manor House/Teepee/Longhouse
- W: Build Wall
- E: Build Market
- A: Build Barracks/Blockhouse/War Academy/War Hut
- S: Build Stable/Corral/Caravanserai
- D: Build Artillery Foundry/Castle
Barracks/Blockhouse/War Hut hotkeys:
- Q: Train Crossbowman/Cetan Bow/Aenna/Macehualtin/Longbowman/Yumi Acher
- W: Train Pikeman/War Club/Puma Spearman/Rajput
- E: Train Musketeer/Sepoy/Ashigaru Musketeer/Tomahawk/Janissary
- R: Train Skirmisher/Wakina Rifle/Forest Prowler/Cassador/Strelets/Gurkha
- T: Train Samurai/Rodelero/Doppelsoldner/Coyote Runner
Hold shift to create a batch of five instead of a single unit unless you are playing the Russians (e.g. Shift-E to train 5 Sepoys).
Stable/Corral/Caravanserai hotkeys:
- Q: Train Hussar/Kanya Horseman/Cossack/Uhlan/Axe Rider/Sowar/Naginata Rider
- W: Train Dragoon/Musket Rider/Cavalry Archer/War Wagon/Bow Rider/Zamburak/Yabusame
- E: Train Cuirassier/Mahout/Lancer
- R: Train Rifle Rider/Oprichnik/Howdah
Hold shift to create a batch of five instead of a single unit (e.g. Shift-W to train 5 Zamburaks).
Artillery Foundry hotkeys:
- Q: Train Abus Gun
- W: Train Grenadier
- E: Train Falconet
- R: Train Culverin
- T: Train Horse Artillery
Hold shift to create a batch of five instead of a single unit (e.g. Shift-R to train 5 Culverins).
Town Center hotkeys
- V: Train Settler/Villager/Coureur des Bois
- Shift-V: Train 5 Settlers/Villagers/Coureurs des Bois (I take no responsibility for your usage of this)
- N: Eject garrisoned units.
Unit tactics hotkeys:
- Shift-Q: Ranged mode
- Shift-W: Melee mode
- Shift-E: Cover mode
Miscellaneous hotkeys:
- X: Select all of same type
- §: Visit Homecity
As you can see, a lot of hotkeys are missing - for example all the War Academy and Noble's Hut hotkeys. This is simply because I do not play every civilization (yet) and have not mapped them. I might also have forgot some hotkeys, but I will edit this post when I remember them.

I think it's better to use a global hotkey for ejecting units and a button that is more on the left side of the keyboard, „N" can be a bit awkward at times, I personally use and can recommend „A" as it's pretty easy to spam.

Where is that button?
I'd also add an explorer crackshot hotkey, as this particular ability is used always, no matter what, and also some additional ones, like docks, fishing ships and so on. I'd recommend „Find all barracks-type buildings" instead of „Find barracks", too.

Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
I have a similar set up. Why not use Q for villager training to match the other training buildings?
Also, do you have hotkey for building buildings? Mine are something like
Q - House / Trading Post (yep, both)
W - Market
E - Mill I think?
A - Barracks
S - Stable
D - Artillery Foundry
F - Outpost maybe, not sure
They're set up in a way so it's decreasing importance for Eco buildings and Military buildings, which even means that the ones I don't know for sure I can guess pretty well.
Also, some of my others are interesting I think:
Space - TC
Ctrl + Space - Idle Villager
Shift + Space - Explorer
Caps lock - Homecity
F3 - eject
(these next two are really dumb and limit me to 3 control groups)
4 - Find barracks
5 - Find stable

How does that work in practise? I imagine when you have less than 200w it selects a house, but in other cases?

Maybe switch them to „F1" and „F2"?

F1 and F2 aren't bad ideas, hadn't considered that. Thank you. :)
The TP/house thing selects a house unless you have hit the house limit. Primary reason is so explorer gets Q for TP and villagers get Q for house if you can build one. I've hardly ever built a TP with villagers so it works out okay.
Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
If that's a case, then it's fine, I may consider switching a TP to an already mapped key to save some space for other useful things
I was using both „F1" and „F2" on my old keyboard for these (more specifically for „Find all barracks-type buildings" etc.), but now that I switched to a laptop they
re no longer available as they have different functions, mapped by the system, just like every other „Fx" key. „F1" and „F2" are „responsible" for muting and decreasing the volume, respectively.

To the left of 1. Above Tab and under Escape (Swedish keyboard).

Ok, for me it's either ` or ~
Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
These are actual conflicts in case you have a villager selected. How does that work?Gendarme wrote:- A: Find Barracks/Blockhouse/War Academy/War Hut

- A: Build Barracks/Blockhouse/War Academy/War Hut

- D: Build Artillery Foundry/Castle
Use CTRL+A, CTRL+S and CTRL+D to build imo. You only do that once or twice per game anyway.
Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
I use same key for "build market" and "find market". This way I never make 2 markets

i use CTR+ X to find the buildings and X to build. A lot more convenient imo.

Lol that's so smart. I have only build a second market on saguenay or silk road like 100 times.
Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
Why is that more convenient (other than because you're used to it), considering you're using the find hotkeys much more often than the build ones?lordraphael wrote:Goodspeed wrote:These are actual conflicts in case you have a villager selected. Actually I also find that more convenient since I use ctrl groups to find buildings.
Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
Hi I have an issue regarding the hotkeys.. So I have Find explorer on A and Build Artillery Foundry on A too. But even when I have chosen a vill and then press A the order that is executed is find explorer. How can I fix this?

Well, in the early game, speed and APM is more important (I think), so building your first barracks and stable quickly with hotkeys is what I find important. Also, I am shit at this game so I probably don't add more military buildings as often as I am supposed to.
Furthermore, there shouldn't really be a conflict. IMO the game should prioritize building over finding, because you have a settler selected after all. If you want to find all you have to do is not having a settler selected, which I actually thought was the case, until I started playing again now in 2016. Is it possible that the RE-patch changed the priorities?
CTRL+X for building sounds nice, though. I don't think it will conflict with anything that I have.

Yeah, I think the exact same thing, I personally took almost all of my hotkeys habits from AoC, which seems to be the case there, too :) Also for me finding all barracks and stables is more comfortable and I use it almost exclusively.

That's because finding a unit is a global hotkey that works regardless of what you select, whereas a build hotkey is one mapped to vills only, therefore the former is prioritised over the latter :)

I remember getting the hotkeys. Didn't even take a day to get used to them. Having military buildings in control groups is torture.

Do any of you guys have a gaming mouse with lots of buttons on it?
Re: My hotkey setup (totally "inspired" by MrMilo)
I use one extra mouse button to find explorer. But I always have it in control group 1 in discovery age anyways. It's just an extra thing that doesn't have too much use.
