Is using Discord in team games an unfair advantage?

Post by site »

I'm curious as to what you all think. Is using Discord in 2v2 3v3 4v4 unfair? Would you even say it's cheating?

My opinion is that everyone can do it, so it's okay. At the same time though, I find that @Ashvin and I win every fair game we're in when we can Discord voice chat. The communication really, really helps.

Anyone can do it, so no.

Certainly, people who are already friends have "easier access," but you can quickly exchange Skype details before a game in whisper and be up and running in a matter of 30 seconds. Host shouldn't kick you before then, therefore no excuse.

You could now get into the topic of language barriers, but I'd argue if someone cannot speak their teammate's language, Skype or no Skype is hardly going to make much difference and therefore the teams probably weren't *quite* evenly matched because of the handicap caused by the language barrier.

Hmm Poll.

Think it like you areaking a home party. Will you tell your m8 such as like "GO PLAY OUTSIDE ITS UNFAIR IF WE PLAY SAME PLACE" thats exacly the logic and its pretty much fair. For some people its even worse multitasking when they are playing, so talking with someone will make them even worse for some...

discord streaming is pretty OP too, then you have multiple "experts" giving you advise watching the stream

Collectivising the gameplay by committee--that is Soviet way!

I like Site's statement at the beginning:
"ashvin and I win every single FAIR game we join" or something along these lines.
We can't really determine the advantages of discord, if only from this post, because Site gets to decide which games are not fair or not. Maybe lose=unfair game? :hehe:

instant communication removing the barrier of apm and time of typing is a pretty big advantage. but so is having a reliable and consistent team mate where they plan out strategies. Its why so many clan hosted games win over people who are random team mates. discord just exemplifies it. But its impossible to regulate or even determine if happening. (unless in FFA sometimes you can tell)

It is adding an additional program to the game, so that is kind of like cheating but not really since it does not change the game itself.

is discord allowed in tourney 2v2 games?

It's ok to use it yeah anyone can do it but some people might not be able to hold the multitask of talking and playing good at the same time so in the end it helps the person which is able to handle that multitask I guess it's a slight advantage for the multitask guys. But I don't consider that as a cheating. If you get my point.

It's unfair yeah, but it inst cheating, it's your problem if you dont want to use it, it's like when a player with a lot of hotkeys plays against somebody who doesnt use them

I think it isn't unfair, but you will have a small advantage. This advantage isn't unfair since everyone can do it. I would encourage everyone to do it actually, since games become much better and much more fun if you talk to your teammate. At least, that applies for me.

I believe its just smart. I always struggle when im in a random team vs a clan team, who are probably on discord, skype or teamspeak, they always have the edge in communication plus they have probably played many times together. I don't play random team any more, there is always one person in your team that ruins it.

I would venture to say that using voice chat can add a few PR to your team.

I feel if you know what you're doing communication may not be that relevant, though still it helps for obvious reason. The question about fairness is rather absurd for me.

Also l2poll, people should be able to change their votes :!:

I guess shouting to teammates in a football match is a cheat too, right? Because language is not a part of the game and the dudes in a random team may not know your language, whereas those in a trained team usually do.

It is great and is a sign of competitive play. No way it is cheating.

It's pretty much a cheat, but not one that people should be banned for like building rotate and ekanta ui since it's outside the realm of the game
