There goes any future chance for Turkey to join the EU.
The army has too much clout for a democracy. Even though I don't like Erdogan and I hope he goes away, this is a bad precedent for Turkey which will mess with their credibility as a democracy and as a NATO ally.

he not radical at all imo.
Re: Breeze please stay safe!
Instability in the middle east? I am VERY surprised by this news.
Re: Breeze please stay safe!
Well, Turkey was getting too Islamic lately. But having a military coup doesn't make it better. Both are bad outcomes for a country that tries to be a democracy and a Western ally.

Military junta is the worst case scenario. Look at Egypt, they also kicked a democratically-elected president (Morsi). El-Sisi bought 2 French helicopter carriers and the right-minded Westerners turned a blind eye to this coup d'état.

@iNcog
He's not, imo. I mean he's a charismatic politician who poses as a "nation father" and uses lots of Muslim arguments in his public discourse. But that doesn't mean he should be taken down by the military, that screws with democracy.
It is true that lately Erdogan's regime has shown some signs of abuse. They gave a suspended prison sentence to a former Miss Turkey (Merve Buyuksarac) for writing a poem which "insulted" Erdogan. This is a very authoritarian approach to justice. Some of the stuff that Erdogan did is not so democratic either. So maybe the military thinks they should "reboot" the democratic process. Because if they let Erdogan in power for longer, he might turn Turkey into an authoritarian state.

MILITARY COUP IN TURKEY
A group within the Turkish military has taken over the government in Turkey. Hostages include Turkish civil servants and the Chief of Military Staff. The coup was unauthorised by military command and is being condemned by the Turkish government as an attack against democracy.

Re: Breeze please stay safe!
Yep, just as I thought. The army is taking over because they think democracy is being threatened by Erdogan's regime. Oddly enough, they are right, but by doing a military coup, they are breaking democratic rules too...
In the meantime Erdogan claims he still has the power:
Turkey to be ruled by 'peace council' - military
Posted at 00:15
A statement has been out on state television. It is not clear who the statement was by, amid reports that the army chief was being held.
Continuing to read the military's statement, the TRT announcer says Turkey's democratic and secular rule of law has been eroded by the current government, Reuters reports. The country is now run by a "peace council" that will ensure the safety of the population, the announcer adds. A new constitution will be prepared "as soon as possible"
In the meantime Erdogan claims he still has the power:
Erdogan and government 'still in power'

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his government are still in power and will not tolerate attempts to undermine democracy, a presidential source tells the Reuters news agency.

EU source says Turkey coup bid looks substantial, 'not just a few colonels'
A coup attempt in Turkey involves a substantial part of the military and "not just a few colonels", a European Union source monitoring events in the EU candidate country said on Friday.
"It looks like a relatively well orchestrated coup by a substantial body of the military, not just a few colonels," the source told Reuters.
"They’ve got control of the airports and are expecting control over the TV station imminently," the source said, shortly before state television TRT broadcast a military declaration of martial law.
"They control several strategic points in Istanbul. Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing," the source said.
Another European diplomat said he was attending a dinner with the Turkish ambassador in a European capital when they were interrupted by messages on their mobile phones.
"This is clearly not some tinpot little coup. The Turkish ambassador was clearly shocked and is taking it very seriously," the diplomat told Reuters as the dinner party broke up.
