RO128 extension and start of RO64

Due to the short amount of time to play the RO128 matches we have decided to extend the RO128 for a few extra days. Meanwhile the RO64 matches have started already for as far as those have been determined. The deadline for the RO128 will be this weekend, while the RO64 will finish next weekend. This weekend, a combination of RO128 and RO64 matches will be streamed, as usual on twitch.tv/esoctv. Check out the streamschedule here.

The round of 64 is the first round in which the seeded players, the 32 best players, will have to play. Thatā€™s why we will take a closer look at these players by listing the favorites to win it.

The favorites
The favorites is possible a misplaced term. Maybe it should be renamed to ā€˜the favoriteā€™. Most people will know who I am talking about. The clear and undisputed favorite to win this tournament is the one and only H2O. Heā€™s the water to our boy, the one that stands up and leads us when the need is there, itā€™s the dictator we donā€™t deserve but need, the ever so salty Ryan Mankl, but most importantly, one hell of a player. There have been very few tournaments where the WCG Champion hasnā€™t won, and none that I can recall where he hasnā€™t gone very far into the tournament. It goes without saying that H2O is yet again the man to beat. Some may argue that H2O in top shape might not even be beatable.

There are players that definitely do have a shot however. One of those players is LordRaphael. Although he lost 5-0 to H2O in the finals of the winter tournament, all of those games were very close and couldā€™ve gone either way. LordRahpaelā€™s bracket was extremely hard otherwise and he showed what a great player he is there.

Another player that has a shot at beating H2O is Irishfaithful. Irishfaithful hasnā€™t had much tournament participation yet, but is widely recognized as one of the most skilled players in the game. His skill with France is scary, and supposedly he plays quite a few other civs extremely well. Irishfaithful is one of the players that is slightly less involved in the community, and is in that sense rather unknown and almost mysterious. Many of the pro players tip him as one of those that could do extremely well however. Iā€™m curious to see him play and see what shape he is in right now.

Mitoe showed off that heā€™s one of those players that can go toe to toe with H2O. In the winter tournament he managed to get ahead 2-0, to then mess up and throw away the next four games in the series, losing to the eventual champion. Mitoe has so far always lost to the one that ended up taking it all, so letā€™s hope he doesnā€™t lose to himself umeu-style and ends up breaking reality and predictions. This tournament, one of his main civs Dutch has received significant buffs, which should end up helping him out a lot. The other main civ of Mitoe, Germany, was nerfed however, so itā€™s interesting to see how this will work out for Mitoe.

Kynesie might be one of the most consistent players. In all past three ESOC tournaments, Kynesie has made a great run. His style is one of the more unique styles out there, abusing the wall spam and water gameplay to its maximal potential. Beating Kynesie on a water-heavy map is something very few people could hope to achieve. It doesnā€™t seem unlikely at all given the past performances that kynesie will once again make a good run, maybe finally win a tournament.

Snowww, also known as Erik, has signed up for the autumn too. Once snowww was a on a different level of most mortals playing these game, however his shape has declined since. If he ends up practicing a lot and taking the tournament seriously, he can beat anyone here. The question is, like with many players that signed up, if he will manage to get in shape.

Another one of those players that needs to find the shape to be able to win is Umeu. Umeu likes to be vague about his shape and motivation. Last winter, he claimed to not be very interested in preparing and practicing a lot for the tournament, yet he ended up preparing really well for all his matches and showing off some very neat gameplay (although his coinflip game was not quite up to par). Umeu is a smart player who excels at preparing for tournament matches. A skill that is not to be underestimated at all, as the civ picking rules really promote good preparation. Is umeu trying to trick us all by saying heā€™s not in great shape right now, or is he for once actually speaking the truth?

Mongo10, the number 1 on ELO ratings at the moment of writing, had a great run last tournament, fallen just short of the semifinals. In the summer tournament he made name for himself by beating the eventual winner Samwise12 with some classic China saloon mameluke gameplay. While China used to be his clear main civ, Mongo has greatly expanded his civ pool ever since and now can play many civs on a tournament worthy level.

Garja, the god of polls, always has to be mentioned. While his tournament prime is in the past now, Garja is still a great player. Now that Boneng, considered to be the counter to Garja, has not signed up, Garja might just go very far. His unique approach to the game might lead him to discover new ways to beat his opponents.

One of the most peculiar favorites is Aizamk. Anyone watching his streams knows that Aizamk is an amazing player that can compete with top players while doing very trolly strats. People always wonder, what would happen if Aizamk played seriously. Recent tournament results havenā€™t been very great for Aizamk however (although there are people out there that claim Aizamk prefers studying over winning tournament games), almost as if playing seriously makes him worse. How well Aizamk is going to play is almost impossible to predict, but if the stars align I think Aizamk can beat anyone. It also seems like Aizamk could lose to almost anyone however.

Thereā€™s two players that, like aizamk, do not have the best previous tournament results but canā€™t be forgotten. Those two players are Kingofosmane and Kaiserklein. Both have been playing well lately and have been improving, which is clearly shown by their high ELO ratings. Kaiserkleinā€™s main civs, Germany and France, have been hit by some nerfs in the latest patch which might end up reducing his chances. Kingofosmane has a very typical playstyle, reminiscent of Kynesieā€™s. Heā€™s the main advocate for the yumi+wall style. This style is rather predictable, and could lead to someone preparing well against it and beating king that way.

These 13 players are the players I consider the favorites. Many of the other players that signed up could surprise however. How this tournament shall develop is going to be a treat to watch regardless. Make sure to check the streams out as often as possible!

Second chance tournament
We will be hosting a ā€˜Second Chance Tournamentā€™ during the main tournament aimed at the players that were eliminated from the Autumn tournament. This tournament will start at the same time the round of 32 will start. The second chance tournament is inspired by the idea of the LCM (Lieutenant, Captain, Major) tournament idea that popped up a while ago. There will be no prize pool, the tournament is just to offer the backbone of our community, the large mass of active LCM players, a chance to compete in a tournament over possibly multiple rounds and a chance to actually win a tournament. More details about the sign up prerequisites will follow.

Last stream the donation alert was unfortunately not set up. We apologize for this inconvenience and shall make sure the donation alert will be set up in the future or notify if itā€™s not the case. Due to this some donations were missed. We want to give a shout out to the people that we missed:

I just want to throw out there something which just hit me.

If you use the exact same graphic for every news-piece, it doesn't hit you in the face when there's a new news post to read.

I just hope DE is not going to implement all of the EP changes. Right now it is a big clusterfuck.

Goodspeed you cheap bastard!

Enjoyable piece on how the tournament is shaping up, Jerom. Many thanks to everyone contributing to the community in general and this current event in particular. The amount of content, at this early stage already, is pleasantly surprising!

What about Aizamk? He seems so strong sometimes...does his "creativity" get in his way, or does he have some other weakness?
