ESOC 2v2 Invitational Round of 8 Recap:

Last weekend the ESOC 2v2 invitational tournament began and we saw 4 matches take place. The games are now available to be watched on YouTube. For a recap, check out below if you don’t mind spoilers!
Game 1 on Kamchatka we saw Mitoe and Kaiser take Ports and Russia respectively against Prince’s French and Erik’s Brit. Kaiser and Mitoe had a nice early hold at their forward base to gain an early advantage but the Prince / Erik team was able to show impressive map presence with raids in many spots to slow down the push from the Kaiser/Mitoe team. After Kaiser went age 3, their opponents sensed a time of weakness and capitalized with pressure on the forward along with continued raiding to secure game 1.

Game 2 on Hudson featured an Indian/French (Mitoe/Kaiser) vs. Indian/German (Prince/Erik) matchup. Kaiser and Mitoe again had a nice start by blocking Prince’s agra, while Mitoe went for a greedy in base Karni mata behind it. However, the unit choice by the Kaiser/Mitoe team of Hussar/Zamburak was no match for Prince’s sepoy mass and they were forced to the back foot. Kaiser and Mitoe never were able to properly adjust their composition and Snowwww and The Doge were able to roll to a 2-0 victory behind their infantry mass.

After a long delay, Game 1 on Kamchatka finally kicked off with the underdog American team of GUA and SoldieR going for a British/Russian combination and trying to secure the map against their opponents who chose Russian (Veni)/Dutch(BlackStar). Veni and Blackstar committed heavily to early military with unit shipments and were able to crush the American’s forward base and roll onto an easy win in game 1.

Game 2 on Hudson featured the game 1 winners taking a strong eco / water combination with Ports and British while their opponents countered with Aztec and Ports. The American team tried to trick their opponents with water deck picks and then committing to a strong pressure early on while ignoring water and eco. With the port TC along with the infantry mass Blackstar was able to mass, the winners of game 1 were able to hold and take down the series 2-0.

Game 1 on Kamchatka opened with a India/Dutch mirror. The strategies deviated right off the bat with UhLaN/roiarthurbis team going for hussar/sepoy whereas their opponents went for skirm/sepoy. The hussar /sepoy composition was unable to get any significant raids or damage done while their opponents played a economically heavy style. Both sides massed until H2O and Sam pressed out with a large skirm / zamb mass and were able to break the agra with their superior mass and unit upgrades.

Game 2 on Kamchatka saw the winners take French and British vs British and Russia. Some early pressure from the Russian player was able to put the favorites on the back foot. Both teams were able to mass up while the russian/brit team tried to choke the resources out with 2 blockhouse map control. Again through better unit upgrades and positioning, the game 1 winners were able to break their opponents forward base and take the series 2-0.

Game 1 featured a Japan/French mirror on Kamchatka. Both Japan players went heavy on shrines and eco while the French players went for hussars and tried to raid. The game was back and forth with shrine sieging until all players went age 3. Hazza went quickly to age 4 and pressured his opponents mains with his flaming arrow shipments and age 4 ashi. In the end, Hazza’s age 4 ashi were able to do enough damage on raids to secure game 1 for team #Brexit.

Team Brexit locked in with India/Germany for game 2 on Hudson Bay and were counter picked by Russia/Germany. The challengers tried a tower rush with standard Russian aggression in order to try and inflict early damage against their opponents early eco play. Some cheeky Uhlan raids and a gurkha switch by the indian player was enough to hold the aggression and take the series 2-0.
This weekend we will have the two semi-final matches. Friday at 21 GMT we will see arguably one of the biggest games in the history of AOE3. Three of the winners in the ESOC open tournaments (BlackStar_OP- Spring 2015, Samwise12- Summer 2015 and H2O- Winter 2015) along with the legendary team player and caster Veni_Vidi_Vici_W will clash in a best of 5!

In the other semi-final, WickedCossack and Hazza54321 (aka team Brexit) will take on PrinceofKabul and snowww. The game will take place Saturday at 16 GMT. Although this series doesn’t have the same starpower feel to it, there’s no doubt that either of these teams are serious contenders to take down the win in this tournament. See the bracket below for the current standings!
