This site in Google Search Results
When I searched "aoe3," "age of empires 3," and "age of empires iii," this site didn't show up on the first page of results. It showed up on the fourth page, when I searched "age of empires iii." Is there any way to improve the placement of the website in the results?
I noticed aoe3.heavengames.com shows up on the first page, but I would think this site gets more traffic.
Also, the site description in the search results was a post about a steam sale. That could probably be improved as well.
Edit: it seems the <meta> tag has something to do with the description:

I remember someone posting on here looking for someone to play that with him

Didn't show on the first 10 pages from Cyprus IP. In other words, Google don't see ESOC to be relevant to Age of Empires 3.
However, for "how to beat india as british aoe3" it came up on a prominent 2nd spot.

Further analysis shows that the particular page listed is heavy on variations of the search term, which is why Google gives it a high ranking factor.
Scroll trough some of the threads here and I bet you wont find that many "Age of Empires 3" (or variations) in comparison to other sites.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a lengthy and often expensive process and forums are notorious for ranking poor, maybe with the exception of question related search terms.

we should have a sub forum where we spam topics and responses where we just type "Age of Empires 3" in bold and all caps (iirc that's one way to help a sites SEO)
Re: This site in Google Search Results
That is many updates ago that worked. If we did that now ESOC would be penalized for keyword stuffing :-)
I think the optimal keyword density is around 0.5-1% and with the content being around 700 words.
Back in the days porn sites would have 100's of keywords at the bottom of their site, making one so tired of scrolling that a wank was impossible :/
FML.

I think you got it backwards. I'd say that Google should be envious of not being featured on this website.

Re: This site in Google Search Results
The term "Age of Empires 3" is only found 2 time on the Home page and 4 times on the Forums page (except for active threads mentioning Age of Empires 3). Also, there is no "About" on the Home page, so connecting ESOC to Age of Empires 3 is quite hard.

Re: This site in Google Search Results
We've talked about this a few times in the past, but no one ever really got around to it. I added a meta description to the home page and changed the home page title to "ESOCommunity - Age of Empires III tournaments, replays, and strategy". Not sure when Google will re-index.

I don't think this URL structure is the best for SEO viewtopic.php?p=273569#p273569
Keep in mind that Google rank pages, not sites.

How do you think the URL structure could be improved? Does URL structure really have that much bearing on SEO?
I am afraid the URL structure may not be that easy to change, however, but I'd like to hear out in more detail what you mean.
Re: This site in Google Search Results
Something like .net/topic/guide_to_brits for example. Replace / with = as per coding options.
I did a few random AOE 3 searches and it seems all other sites have that.
I know a few webmasters who's a little into SEO and they download various stuff to make "Clean URLs"
I can ask around, but it will be a waste of effort if you guys don't have at least a $100 monthly budget.
First step will be to analyze if there even is enough search volume for you guys to even bother with SEO, then you should purchase a tool that can show you current rankings for various keywords. Once that is done you need to evaluate the difficulty for the keywords you want to improve rankings for.
Next step is to analyze competitors profile, etc...
I know guys that does all of the above, but it ain't for free. As I said, I can dig around a little and put you in contact with such a guy if you are serious about it.
Maybe he can also suggest, what to do in regards to the upcoming new releases of existing AOE games and in regards to AOE 4.

This is how StackOverflow does it: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11227809/why-is-it-faster-to-process-a-sorted-array-than-an-unsorted-array but yeah, this isn't a GET request but an actual address. Not sure if it's possible to do that.

I'd say we don't have a budget to do any professional SEO -- we're not a business. We're just looking to do what we can to keep content accessible.

Re: This site in Google Search Results
Yeah I think just this little tweak helped a lot. I am also looking into implementing HTTPS, which may also help us out (although I don't know how much), as I've read Google penalizes non-HTTPS sites (and I've been meaning to do it anyway).
