I believe that would require purchasing a certificate, which is an additional expense we don't need.

I've been following a free cert project that went public just three days ago. This might be worth looking into: https://letsencrypt.org
Or maybe I should finally man up and look into this myself

It's not on our list of things to do. That list is already pretty long. So far though nothing on this site is particularly worth encrypting.

Well if I PM someone the text of the new basement accords I don't want that slipping into the wrong hands. It is secret for a reason, people may get upset if they knew what was being discussed

The problem with having HTTPS is that we cannot easily use 3rd party data from sites with only http. This includes our dear ELO site for example
