I know it's possible. Could be useful to embed Soundcloud music links. Or mp3s hosted on other sites.

Each browser already has a built-in interface for them, you just have to provide a wrapper tag for them to become embeddable.

Change to audio=mpeg for a .mp3

I'm not sure you can get a direct link to soundcloud items though.

Thanks. It's not unnecessary because we have a music thread where we can now post links to soundfiles directly, no need to have to post videos anymore.

And embedding sound files doesn't cost the site any resource, since it's all rendered on the client-side.

Can you also add a button in the post editor UI for it? It should be trivial.

Also, there might be a way to embed Soundcloud links, by wrapping their player in an iframe. Or there might be some phpBB3 add-ons that can parse links and render the player. Still, at least we have an extra option now.
