what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
Hi, I'm confused on how you should target your units on opponent's units(basically equivalent resources for both sides). For instance, french mirror with skirm + goon + cur, to put cur on cur or skirm? Or german mirror with skirm uhlan, to let skirms shoot at skirms or uhlans?
BTW how on earth did BS won that final fight in the attached rec...

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
1. Try to attack the countered units. E.g. cuir vs skirm, skirm vs goon.
2. At the same time, avoid pathing.
So generally you put cuir on cuir, but send 2-3 cuir and try to attack from aside.

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
Ranged units have less pathing problem, so you can micro your skirms to snipe his goons, while don't micro your cuir too much.

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
If skirm cav against skirm cav, the player with some cav left at the end will win, so try to kill all his cav ASAP and keep yours.
Also sometimes in battles with 3+ unit types, if you try to reach the unit to counter, you will be sniped to death while running, so even if you should try this not to happen, few damage is less bad than no damage at all
P.S. I didn't download the rec but I guess it is this fight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqScusvVIAU&t=1m57s
well yes, maybe we need to watch it in slow motion to understand better

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
In that battle all the ulhans split over multiple units, in particular many of them were on skirms. Ulhans tend to do better than cuirs in cav vs cav so if they were grouped together vs cuirs they would have won comfortably. Also 2 cuirs were tanking the shoots of all Nagayumi's skirms, while those should have targeted the 3 goons. Also, I didn't rewatch but it's likely cuirs had cav combat which makes them way stronger.
Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
Cav combat was not present there.
Generally, what @P i k i l i c said — try to look for counters, but not at all cost, and make sure you get rid of opponent's deadliest units first. You can watch the video of SirCallen getting coached live by H2O when the former is advised to focus his falconets on uhlans even though there are still enemy skirms left on the field and in range.

Skirm/goon/cav mirror: cav on cav, goons on cav, skirms on goons.
Skirm/goon mirror: skirms on goons, goons on skirms. (though most of the time you actually just keep your goons in the back in case your opponent switches to hand cav)
Skirm/cav mirror: cav on cav, skirms on skirms.
Skirm/cav vs skirm/goon: goons and skirms on cav, skirms on goons and cav attacking anything it can reach.
There's many other scenarios but I'm lazy

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
It all depends on numbers. Skirm-cav mirror, I'd shoot at cav with skirms too. Skirm-goon mirror I'd also shoot with both on skirms. Basically it all depends if you can unbalance opponent's combo fast enough to profit on that.

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
Well if it's uhlans you should probably shoot at them, but if it's some high hp cav I'm not sure. In skirm goon mirror if you try to shoot at skirms with both skirms and goons, your goons will drop fast and you will be vulnerable to a cav switch

Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
It fully depends on the situation and positioning. General rule is to not overmicro and to actually let your units attack and not run around looking for proper units to fight.

If its uhlans just resign Kappa
Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
Thanks for all advices:) I'm also thinking about musks and skirms/xbow/strelets/ combo. Would you group them all together so that hand cav would get all ur long ranged units? Or separate groups so that ranged units could poke?Or it is just a bad combo..

yeah it is that fight i guess BS managed to have curs left vs uhlans so that won him at last
Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
It's just because ww are too stupid. If nagayumi has 9 blackriders he has 70% chance to win.
Re: what and how to micro in fights with mixed units
If you want to practice micro, there is a scenario for it by Aizamk. Lots of people have it, but if you can't find me, add me on eso and we'll play together. ( Asateo )
My micro isn't great, but yet improved by this scenario. When you see equally strong opponents fight and one has half his army still standing, you know you have work to do.

Ideally you'd want to split your ranged heavy infantry from your other ranged infantry units, as they serve different purposes and their range usually vastly differ, and it's the factor the latter usually want to abuse by kiting. Later on, however, when the armies get bigger, it's quite common to see it to save valuable APM — it's better to manage them both in one groups than manage neither in separate formations

A new one? Name/link? Or is it just Time to Micro?

Interjection's RTTM seems to be a lot of fun, although it is probably still a work in progress.
Pay more attention to detail.

Can someone link me to the Time to Micro thread?

I tried it and it's not as good, every round there is a cannon war with a shit-ton of units. Such efforts, though, certainly have some potential, and I'd be willing to give possible further iterations a go when available!
