Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
I know this is just a test of attack without micro, why dragoon in melee (with less damage) won, some reason :
Dragoon dont hv melee damage resist, it is good idea put some dragoon in melee when u hv to deal with full dragoon or combo shirm with your full dragoon or shirm combo ?

Tfw you realize first in 2018 that dragoons don't melee in volley mode when in melee range like skirmishers do.

Probably it's a good thing to do against mamelukes

Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
Goons are actually rather weak units in straight up fights. Their strength relies on their speed and range, as well as essentially no ranged unit having a strong multiplier against them, which means they don't really get hard countered when at range. When you send your goons in melee mode, you negate all these perks, since you don't use their speed nor their range, and they can get caught by melee units that will be stronger than them in melee fights. So it's pretty bad, and should only be done in niche cases, for example to snare your opponent's army if you know you have military advantage anyway, or to snipe unprotected cannons.
About skirm goon mirror: why would you even make goons there, if you send them in melee mode against skirms? You might as well make skirms instead of your goons then, they're much better at killing skirm/goon anyway.
The point of goons is not to kill your opponent's skirms or goons. They're just here because otherwise, your opponent might just make hand cav and clean up all your skirms. It's just for safety. By sending them in melee mode, they will be in front and will die first, and then you will be completely vulnerable to hand cav. So just keep them in the back, out of range of opponent's skirms, just in case.

Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
It's ok as last effort move. The difference in dps is not that much when pathing is considered. Most of times it's better to keep them in ranged mode for practical reasons.
Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
I use the hand atk vs cannons and archers
Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
Goons are very good against cannons in melee, because cannons have a high rr.

Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
Maybe cavalry archers in melee are better? They have more hp, melee resist but slightly lower dps.
EDIT: actually for units with 30% rr or less it's just not worth to put them in melee.

Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
CA have 1.5 rof in ranged mode, not exactly smart to put them in meelee
It's smart tho to put them on top of other units because of the meelee resistance.

Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
yeah CA melee attack is still halved compared to their ranged attack, even tho rof is the same, so basically never put them in melee except maybe against falcs if you're somehow close enough

Re: Dragoon in melee VS Dragoon in range
Lol true, but seeing that they had a 4.5x vs cav in melee mode i thought it could be good.
Turns out it isn't
