How to Stop a Russian Rush?

I've been struggling with stopping a Russian rush recently playing as British. I just can't seem to get units out quickly enough to defend against the inevitable 5 Cossack + musks/strelet mix that comes in behind it.

I generally try to wall a bit during transition but don't commit enough vils or remember soon enough to be able to get a complete wall built -- just some segments, and segments aren't worth much unless you have a military to fight around them with, so maybe I just need to commit more to walling?

Should I be calling minutemen right away, like when Cossacks get there, or trying to save them for a small mass to arrive?

I've had a little bit of luck starting with a stable + huss first, as they seem to dissuade the initial 5 Cossacks a bit better than musks and they prove useful against strelets, but I'm not sure if this is really most effective than starting with the rax. Also, it is better to age with tower + 200 gold or the 500 food when you know you're going to be rushed?

It also seems on some more defensive maps I have better luck -- I was able to beat of a rush on New England yesterday since it's so easy to quickly wall up to prevent harassment, but on open maps, especially ones with trade routes in the way of walling, like GP and Sonora, I've been unable to beat it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

- definitely tower + 200coin
- age up with -1 vill
- I would rather start with a rax
- do something like 700 wood (only manors + ?stable?) - Military shipment (lb or musk, up to you) - 600w (1 batch of lbs + manors + steel traps)

Normally, you don't need to send a military shipment. Also if you herd poorly it's over :/

You cant do anything , just accept it , Brit cant handle Russia well enough for not having fast ageup option. Fighting russia in age 2 is quite a tough thing to do.

Lol that''s completely not true brit beats russia easily in age 2 on any decent map

7 vills in tc will two-shot a russian musk, thats all you need to know. Just have to deal with early cossacks in some other way.

you have to start stable vs russia tbh, brits age faster and 3-5 huss and mm and tower and tc fire rapes 5coss 5 musk/10strelets

Well regardless, they do at my level (ms/2nd/1st lt.) pretty commonly.

Thanks for the advice everyone. To summarize, it seems the popular solution is:

- age with -1 vil
- tower/200 coin
- start probably huss, maybe musk, doesn''t seem to be a consensus
- use MMs to defend right away
- Ships 700 wood, military if necessary, 600 wood

What do you guys think of walling in transition? Necessary? Or shouldn''t do it at all?

well i dont think walling is necessary as you can bait his army in and trap with mm , and bearing in mind low levels tend to go all in, once you kill first batch of units youve basically won

Thank you! Ive been waiting for this day to savor my imported cattle blood and burn a few bibles that I got on Christmas.

Dont 10 vills in TC + 1 tower shot also kill a musk?

Yes because 90 + 30 = 120 is exactly the hp of russian musk

Brits can easily defend a Russian Rush . Tower, TC fire, MM, some musks or huss..

Start hussar, add rax with 700w.

You can also send 6 musk after 700w if you feel the Russia is sending 2 unit shipments in a row.

British on an ESOC map with nice hunts have the edge on russia.

IMO Russians are favored on the maps with the worst hunts, and brits are favored on the maps with the most hunts' anything in between varies gradually depending on hunts (and other resources).
