you can send 2 vills or 3 fishing ships and try to be faster

skip cons, ship 2v or 3 boats rax and cons in transition 600w first, jap cons 5 clubs and 5 yumi before 6mins

You can probably pressure azzy's warhut down if they age slow with what Hazza says. If they age fast they'll probably have coyo out and ship mace when you're committed under warhut which could get messy.

Vs Russia start Nagi imo

Being a mostly Russia player, some things I have noticed to be important for Japan in this match up(after losing to japan ).Good building placement and walls. Also vs Japan Russia players tend to opt for Strelets instead of Musketeers as they are poor vs Japans Yumi. So adding Naginata Riders as gibson said, works well. They just murder the strelet army . I found this out once when 5 Nagi wrecked my army :(

Consider using the Colonial Militia equivalent against those civs. You 1 shoot stuff instead of 2 shooting and you can call big sentry/irregular batches to complement your army. Your eco will grow super slowly though.

Full wall + yumi + Tc fire worked out really well for me. Also, I did kami + consulate start so I still had some eco after I defended the rush. To also helped me send 5 yumi and 600w.

Ye but it worked vs an MS. You have to work on something which actually works at any type of level game

Naginatas with the Japanese consulate for the Yamabushi clubmen the cossacks (and passive bonus), and even 6 yumi shipment if you're in really bad shape (too many musketeers) should be enough to even hold an all-in where the Russian player stops settler production MrMilo-style. Surely it is good enough to hold off normal Russian aggression. Sure, shrines are more expensive, but everything isn't perfect. Your economy will still be superior, and you will have access to a larger portion of the map, instead of being walled in with immobile yumis. I think any day you can manage to defend with cavalry is a good day.
