He is the most popular Senator based on the states they represent; Vermont loves him more than any other state loves their Senators. He's not the most well-liked across the entire country.

He is the most popular politician in USA, and not only in Vermont. google it or read this article back from august 2017. I cannot find any polls that are more updated. Maybe you can?

If one does a google search for "Sanders most popular," the result will be a long list of news stories about polling that demonstrates the phenomenon of public support for Sanders.

Popularity =/= Electoral success. They correlate, but so does the chocolate consumption per capita and the nr. of Nobel laureates a country produce.
Correlation does not imply causation, but that is not to say correlation and causation are never linked. Your two examples are incomparable.
Electability is probably a function of many variables, popularity being one. Of course Tom Hanks can't just run for president and win but neither can an eccentric, politically fringe candidate even as he possesses a tremendous amount of character.
