AoE3 and Chess thread

  • Quote

Post by P i k i l i c »

Hi guys :flowers:

I rediscovered the beautiful game know as chess some months ago, and it is the most exciting game I know besides Aoe3. Both are extremely different, but strategy is so interesting!
Two of my favorite games:
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1451952
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1259009

I've seen a few people on ESOC say that they play chess, if you play it, what do you like the most in this game? Which opening(s) are you practicing? What is your elorating (notice how AoE3 and chess both use the Elo rating system) ? Do you have an ego rec PGN to share?

By the way did you know that chess has a King of the Hill mode ? In this mode you can win with usual rules or by bringing your King on one of the four central squares

Also, I found some similarities between famous chess and AoE3 players:

Aizamk is the Tal of AoE3: spectacular, successful and popular
Diarouga: Kortchnoi (banned by his former community)
_H2O: Karpov (long career, one of the best of all time)
BlackStar_OP: Kasparov (one of the best of all time, exciting matches against _H2O / Karpov)
Petrosian: kynesie (very defensive)

Do you have other or better ideas?

If you want, you can find me as Pikilic on chess.com (still pretty noob though)
Consider not the one who speaks the truth, but the truth that is said

:hmm: AoE logic :hmm:

To be fair it takes a lot of skill to put the moves from your online chess game into your computer's chess program because the board is upside down.

You tell me.

Also, you compared Aiz to Tal, which is totally accurate. He actually plays chess the same way he plays AoE.

Sounds cool if it is.

Chess is most fun when you start to little know about the game and try gambits, tactical switches. For me after 1800 elo it become statical and like a study and i gave up.
When you said player match first example was Tal-Aizamk.
To add:
Diarouga - Capablanca: experimental and trying to optimize.
Garja - Fisher: Salty
Mitoe - Spassky: Calm and humble
Somppu - Paul Keres: Creative and not gonna give up
Raphael-Botwinnik: Stability
Sirmusket-deep blue: no words!

_H2O - Carlsen: Versatile and heavy emphasis on position. Grinds out little advantages from mostly meta openings and capitalizes on opponents' mistakes. Has arguably exceeded his superior, arguably. Not unbeatable.

iamgrunt - Kasparov: Dueful, dynamic attacks with an ability to always assess the game better than his opponents. Prefers having the tempo and is feared most when he does.

Lol Fisher is arguably considered the best player ever. Very much doubt that fits me.
In general I'd say your comparison can be improved.

Maybe, for the time. There is no doubt that Fischer at his peak would not be able to beat most of the top 20 in a match. Chess has matured immensely over the past few years and the base level of knowledge has improved significantly.

Anyway, to answer the OP, I like chess but haven't played more than a handful of games in the past couple of years. The last time I played chess was about 3 years ago when GoodSpeed's old AoE Skype group was playing chess a lot.

I'd say my rating is somewhere between 1600-1800, and my favourite openings are the Scotch and Sicilian.

I used to be into it, but I got super salty over losing and decided it wasn't worth my time. Also I saw what higher level gameplay looked like and it looked awful. It feels too rigid - meta heavy. The fact that computers are better than humans at it leads me to believe that it lost its original appeal. It's still fun to play a casual game every now and then; but I don't know why people invest so much time into it.

Also I would put Samwise as Fisher and Raphael as Kramnik.

Chess is a really nice game to play and watch, but I always preferred to play it face2face with someone rather than online. Just sucks that finding someone to play chess with IRL is almost harder than finding a 1v1 on ESO

I lived in a shared kitchen student apartment a year ago and we would play chess all the time. Even had a 1-day tournament and the winner recieved a King's crown to wear whenever he or she felt like :chinese:

Good to see someone making a(nother) chess thread. I was in the chess team in middle and high school. These days, I usually play a few games online whenever I feel like it, and sometimes hang out with my friends to play, analyse and perhaps learn a few 'discoveries' from each other.

To answer the questions of the OP, the process of thinking about strategies and tactics (positioning, maneuverability, etc.) in mid-to-late game is more than often enjoyable. There aren't really any openings that I am currently practising, and I would say it is not actually necessary to do so as long as it meets the requirements of a good opening. I don't really have an ELO rating since I don't play for ELOs and stuff (nor do I care about it), and playing/learning chess (aside from professional players who do it for a living) should always be given the priority. As for ego recs, the more spectacular ones contain real names of my friends, so I cannot really upload them here; but there is a rather insane one that I played on Monday - I played as white and there were a few rather glaring mistakes towards the end, but please bear with me as it was 4 in the morning.

Speaking of which, @Gendarme, when can we play some chess games again? :P

P.S.: ESOC doesn't allow PGN files, so I am uploading the raw txt file instead. :flowers:
