SoldieR going to England
SoldieR going to England
I am in the initial stages of planning a trip with my gf to go, centered around seeing an NFL game that the Eagles play in London, Wembley Stadium, Oct 28. So I have a few questions:
1) Places to stay (areas, countries)
2) Places/people to visit
3) Can someone grab tickets for me for the games, they are super expensive on stubhub..
4) Any other reccomendations or warnings
Will be about a 10 day trip. Hope to hear some good stuff, thanks!

Re: SoldieR going to England
Take a train to Amsterdam for a couple days. It's only a 6 hour trip.

Re: SoldieR going to England
So far I got that there's potential for a 6 hour train ride to Amsterdam. Cool

Re: SoldieR going to England
I'd suggest stay 2-3 days in london, take a train to amsterdam for 2 days and fly to spend 4 days in budapest/prag before flying back to London for return. Flights inside europe are very cheap.

Out of all places on the great Isles, you have picked London as the centre of your trip. London is a very modern (by modern, I mean there's still the U-tube) and fast-paced city, and its population is frankly not-so-friendly. It has the highest living cost of all UK cities as well. Oh, and you might want to avoid getting on public transport during rush hours...
Anyway, if you are planning to make London the centre of your visit, it means you are mostly likely going to be staying in expensive places, and more so if it's anywhere near the city centre. It might be cheaper to stay in outlying areas, but it will be a bit less convenient for you to move around.
As for the places to visit, my top recommendation is and always will be Edinburgh - a very nice city itself, and who can forget the symbolic castle on top of an ancient volcano and the shape of the Arthur Seat. If you want something more academic, Oxbridge is always a choice. If you like to see some great tanks, Bovington is the place to go; as for the royal air force, Duxford should be on the list; and if you want to witness the greatness of the royal navy, Portsmouth is always a decent option.
As for London itself, you might want to pick one of the two parks at the city centre and have a nice walk with your gf for a rather romantic touch, but always pay attention to the surroundings because it is not that safe in darkness (same goes for the Meadows in Edinburgh). If you wish to listen to some music, the Royal Albert Hall is the place for spectacular concerts. If you are planning to squander all the money you have saved up, having supper at the Royal Albert Hall can be an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experience (believe me you wouldn't want to go back again afterwards because of how much it costs). The Tower Bridge and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich are some places to go. Museums in London are good, but nothing that spectacular - the British Museum is probably the top choice for foreign visitors.
As for general warnings, there are plenty that you need to know. The Chinatown in London is not a safe place to visit at late night, and try not to book a hotel anywhere close to that area (not entirely sure if it's true, but I was explicitly warned by a few friends of mine a while back). As for the U-tube, once you get to the underground, good luck receiving any signals on your phone. The climate on the Isles can be a bit unfriendly to foreigners as well, so bring along a jacket/coat (preferably one that has a hat attached to it) and make sure you plan the day in advance with reference to the official weather forecast. Also, please do not forget which way to look at when you are crossing a road in the UK without traffic lights.
If anything comes up in my mind and not yet being covered by anyone else, I shall let you know. Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy your visit.

that train is expensive, and it takes more than 6 hours I think.
I would suggest the ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland. It's 1 hour from london to harwich by train I think, 30 minutes from Hook of Holland to Rotterdam and 1 hour from Rotterdam to Amsterdam (though Rotterdam is the better city. Veni lives there too, iirc) the ferry is cheaper, and it's nice trip. I think it takes like 7 hours.

Re: SoldieR going to England
You could just fly into Amsterdam and use our place as a hub. This way you wouldn't have to take all your luggage with you everywhere you go. Flights to other places in Europe are super cheap - like around $30 one way.
Possible itinerary: Chicago to Amsterdam, do/go whatever/wherever for a week (even Paris for a couple of days), then Amsterdam to London for a few days at the end of your trip.
Edited to add:
Whatever you decide, don't forget to check out airbnb and/or hostels for a less expensive alternative to hotels.
