well i dont really trust those speedtests. Like i barely get above 0.5 mb download on steam and here it says i have 4.5
Lagging on aoe has to do with your ping rather then your actual speed.Harsha wrote:
Wtf?You never lag but I do and ur speed is less than mine?!?! Maybe my OP pc's something to do with it.In the words of the omnipotent human,Donald Trump;SAD!

But after a certain bandwidth threshold, more bandwidth doesn't make the game run better. Ping, on the other hand, can slow the game down even if you have more or less bandwidth.
So having high bandwidth won't compensate for a high ping.
By ping I mean both latency and jitter. You may have a low ping, but if it's unstable, you could get occasional spikes of lag.
Laurence Drake wrote:Thanks for this - what do you think is the best way to increase ping?

You mean to lower ping? High ping is bad for gaming. If you want high ping, you could do the opposite of this:
- Play on servers close to your connection
- It's best not to play on a shared connection, or check if someone else is using the connection heavily
- Don't use voice-over-IP programs while playing, if your connection is very slow
- Avoid playing during peak times in your ISP's network, so maybe play more when people are working or at school
- Don't use VPNs or Tor to play games or w/e you're doing on the internet
- Close any programs which might be throttling the connection
- Always play on a wired connection, not wifi
You can check if you have any packet loss, by pinging a domain or IP -- on windows:
Winkey S (launches Search), type cmd, hit Ctrl Shift Enter (to launch as admin) and type ping yourdomainnamehere.com
Replace yourdomainnamehere.com with either the domain name of the server you're trying to connect to or the IP of that server. You should get some results which will show you if you have any data packet loss while connecting with that server. This only tells you if you can physically connect with that server under normal conditions (it's just the network level - layer 3). But it doesn't tell you much about how you can connect on an application level (http, ftp, imap, dns, smtp, etc).
You can do a similar test from your router interface. You can normally connect to your router at http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/, it depends on your model. There you should have some tools (like Diagnostic Tools) to check your ping with a domain/IP.
If you're having issues connecting to a server or have high ping, you can use a tool like PingPlotter to check which node of the internet is slowing your connection down.
https://pingplotter.com/download/
Sometimes, a high ping may be due to congested internet traffic on particular nodes, case in which there's not much you could do (unless your ISP can change routing tables and pick other routes for your traffic).

Yeah, audiophiles have this little known trick of placing their cables on lifters. I heard they can do wonders for your cabled connection too. But they're a bit pricey.
You could probably make do with some cheaper ones, though
You will see a noticeable improvement in your ping stats, if you use these.
