The Climate Change Thread
The Climate Change Thread
Climate Change is one of the most threatening issues that many of the young will face for at least a century. However, i would like your opinions and ideas on how to slow down or stop climate change within our lifetimes. As James Hansen described, in 2012, we needed to "cut carbon usage by 3 % per year now, or else it will get harder and more expensive." I recognize that radical change (Shut down oil companies, and other crap like that) may temporarily put peoples' livelihoods at risk and cause short term economic problems, but it is our responsibility to leave the planet at least no worse than what it is currently (better planet if possible) for future generations. What are your thoughts and solutions to climate change? For me, i think Bernie Sanders' plans to tackle climate change make sense.

Here is a recent TED Talk that Al Gore Gave about climate change, and provides some optimism for the future. He mentioned that solutions are being implemented, so how will we deal with the damage that has already been done?

down with capitalism. Me happy, climate happy.
Seriously though, fighting climate changes means fighting large industries, which means fighting the current economy and the greed that has taken control of us. Only facing the end will mankind sacrifise money for the future. If you wanna make a change, you'll have to come up with economically competitive methods. I believe we will get there at some point before its too late. At least, so I hope.

Helium-3 nuclear fusion. Inexhaustable. Very few waste by-products. Enormous potential output.

@gibson
Isnt that cool then? He invented something with his creativity!!!
However, James Hansen and many others discussed it broadly before the gore monster.

Re: The Climate Change Thread
Simple, we just make the earth colder. Or whatever it is that will reverse this mess. Perhaps in a year or 50 we'll have invented something to actually do something like that, who even knows at this point technology is making such massive jumps.
Otherwise the obvious solution seems to be switching to clean energy sources, that's already underway although it doesn't look like it'll be a quick transition.

global warming will actually most likely result in a new ice age in the northern hemisphere.

Just make the world cooler sounds awfully easy. Sucks its not that easy.
The solution is already there honestly: solar and wind power are all we need. The problem is that switching to these sources isnt in the best interest of our purses, so we dont. Especially because you, as a country, gain from not switching to green energy while the other country does. Its like a student house which is all messy. All of them know its time to clean up but nobody wants to do it in the hope that someone else will do it all instead.

Re: The Climate Change Thread
I guess there are solutions available - what i lacking is the will to do it. Thorium is one nuclear source that could give the world all the energy it could possible need.

Thorium is very safe - and there are very little vaste. No plutoium to make bombs!
8 grams of thorium will fuel your car for a 100 years! The future is coming fast i hope

Fusion lol? Link? So far fusion for us is very energy inefficient as we must put in a lot more energy to fuse two atoms than we get out of it. There was talk of "cold fusion" some years ago but that has not been conclusively proven.

Yeah but that guy was just reading his data wrong
this is a great doc on nuclear fusion in general.

Obviously you need to use renewables like solar in the meantime while the tech is developed
http://www.amusingplanet.com/2013/08/th ... spain.html
The main reason why I think He3 is a better fuel for nuclear fusion is that it is aneutronic. The ITER, https://www.iter.org/ uses deuterium which releases neutons which can't be contained within a magnetic field because they are uncharged meaning you have to replace reactor parts regularly. Just google Helium 3
I'm not a physicist or even a scientist but I do think this doesnt' get anywhere near the funding needed

Re: The Climate Change Thread
Nucleair fusion is theoretically the energy source of the future. Practically though, it appears to be rather complex to efficiently create a temperature and pressure high enough for shit to fuse.
Re: The Climate Change Thread
We will have nuclear fusion, it's just unlikely to be in our life time
Re: The Climate Change Thread
ITER will finish in 3 years that is projected to be x10 more than break-even. Depending on how you count it I think some experimenters have already surpassed break-even.

How far along are you in your physics degree btw?

I don't think so, there is enough arable land and fresh water on earth to sustain the population, and the rest of the resources we just have to be careful with. With extensive recycling we probably have enough of the other resources (such as metals) to sustain quite a large population. And of course the energy problem can be solved with more green alternatives. Don't see how "overpopulation" is a problem at all.
