global Co2 emissions are 36 gigatonnes. 1 sq mile of these is claimed to capture up to 1 million tonnes of Co2. How much would building 36000 sq miles of this stuff cost? You'd need to cover all of Indiana. Why do that when you can build these

Here are some real issues with thorium:

1. It's expensive to process and store.

2. It has not been extensively studied and tested, meaning a period of gov't liscensing and study (which costs a ton on both ends) would be required. This means that a company would have to make a huge investment and get far less out of it. This is especially relevant in a competitive business environment.

3. When processed, thorium makes either uranium-233 (produces large quantities of dangerous gamma radiation) or uranium-232, which can be used to make nuclear weapons.

Now onto hydrogen:
It has to be compressed to be used, making it an explosion hazard. Hydrogen was once used in dirigibles (airships) in the WW1 Era, and they were notorious for exploding in mid-flight. This is what caused the Hindenburg to crash.

Also this whole conversation is great and all but how to you get around the majority of the idiots in the country I live in that think it's all made up and just want to drive their trucks and burn fossil fuels. Also happens to be the most economically influential nation in the world. Seems like step 1 is fixing the mindset of the USA and given the way the republican race is going, I have a hard time seeing that happen anytime soon.

Nr 1 is just not true. Its pretty easy to mine, and there are very, very much of it.

Nr 2 I suspect there is to much "politics" surrounding new technology when it comes to nuclear energy. You have the war industry that wants the plutonium to make more bombs; you have the "green movement" refusing any newclear energy what so ever, you have the oil and gas industry who could go "out of business" very fast; and you have all the economic interest put in to the current uranium based technology (not wanting any competitions)

Nr 3 The reason why uranium reactor was chosen, over Thorium, in the 1940 is that they wanted to make bombs. You cant make bombs on the basis of Thorium. So - the knowledge to make a Thorium reactor, has been there for decades.

On the other hand, the world need cheep, renewable power sources, and solar, wind and water energy are making good progress, but it can never meet the demand for energy alone.
Thorium reaktor can use the problematic byproduct from Uranium reactor, and solving the gigantic problem we face with storing these wasteproducts (for thousens of years).

Don't confuse the politicial idiots with the people of America.

Over there you've got Tesla, you've got Honda and Toyata developing hydrogen fuel cells, you've got infrastructures going up which allow people to look into cleaner energy sources. My aunt and uncle live in California and they've got a hybrid.

I'd say the USA is actually quite progressive when it comes to these questions.

Unfortunately I think you may have a skewed opinion based on California and the tech industry. The average American is a moron and believes what their candidates tell them. In fact some recent polls still suggest up to 40% of the country is firmly against any notion of climate change (man made or otherwise). That alone is enough to translate to our republican controlled legislature not doing anything in regards to meaningful change from a national perspective. Of course several states have laws moving in the right direction but those are outweighed by the other states that are no fucks given and polluting more than ever.

Thor energy in Norway, wrote in an artickle from 2014, that they are likely to use Thorium in the first reaktor in 2018: "It was science fiction, but it is not science fiction what happens at IFE's research reactor in Halden. Where the company tests Thor Energy AS thorium as fuel, and that they have done since 2013. If all goes as the company wishes, the first nuclear power plants loaded with thorium fuel already during 2018. The qualification of fuel mixtures they have developed, and that the tests in Halden, goes according to plan".

"It's very much thorium in the world already separated out and located as waste from existing mining. There are also plenty of sources of new thorium.
