How many times did I tell you to stay in Colonial Age, Somppu?! Look what you have done!
Pay more attention to detail.

It's called progress! /s
Yeah, but it really is a shame. You see these beatiful old buildings remind us too much of the the times we were a part of the Russian empire.
Today we would like to be a part of the American empire, hence the huge glass and concrete shopping centers all over the place.
The newest and biggest one is even called "Mall of Tripla" instead of giving it a perfectly good Finnish name "Triplan ostoskeskus".

Re: Suicide of Finland's architecture!
I agree. For some reason old buildings aren't appreciated here. For example Kruunuvuori is an area in eastern Helsinki with many abandoned villas: http://blog.visithelsinki.fi/en/kruunuv ... host-town/
Ofcourse there are many reasons why this has happened, but I still think the city of Helsinki should have taken care of these buildings. So much potential.
Though in it's current state it's a perfect venue for the occasional ug-party held there.

Blame Mies van der Rohe and the "less is more" dogma in architecture.

The Nords don't appreciate their cultural heritage, which is why they're being overrun by 'diversity' and 'tolerance'.

In Poland we don't have such buildings after so many years of various wars :( We have a giant block of concrete in the middle of our capital city called the Palace of Culture and Science, a prominent symbol of socrealism. My home city, Szczecin (Stettin), was damaged in 90% during the II World War.

People spend most of their time inside of the buildings so that's the part that matters.

You make a good point here. Livability and utility are the primary functions of a residential, commercial or industrial building, otherwise you have just made a monument. If you spend so much time and money on a building's exterior that you have to significantly raise the cost of leasing space it it then what real good have you done? Building exteriors should be pleasant to the eye but anything beyond this is just the architect's and owner's ego showing.
Speaking as someone who has worked for decades maintaining buildings, there comes a time when it's just too costly and time consuming to repair an old structure. Plumbing and electrical work is especially cumbersome as it oftentimes takes a complete gutting of an area to bring things up to modern codes. There is no point in having to constantly disrupt the tenants' lives in order to try to keep an old building from falling apart. Best to raze it and build a new building unless it has unique historical significance.
