ZutaZuta Classic: Player Interviews

AoEO has a long history of competition, and it is quite over-due for us to introduce some of the top players within the game’s competitive circle. I would like to introduce Carnage, GiveuAnxiety, PF2K, TheMista, and ZertoN. These players have shown remarkable talent in AoEO and in other games closer to ESOC’s heart. With that in mind, we had them answer some questions regarding their thoughts on the rerelease of AoEO and the Zuta Zuta Classic which is slated to begin next week!

The Zuta Zuta Classic is the first tournament for AoEO since its reopening under Project Celeste. What does this tournament mean for you?
Carnage - It means a lot to me. AoEO is my favorite game of all time yet unfortunately its greatness wasn't seen by a lot of people. Hopefully this tournament can serve as an awesome showcase of AoEO's gameplay and bring in some new players from other rts games. Also... shits gonna be fun af.

GiveUAnxiety - This tournament means a lot to me. I was the person that approached noel and h2o and started the conversation about forming an alliance between AoEO and ESOC. A lot of people helped contribute to this and ESOC has been great with helping the AoEO community. I'm excited to see how amazing this first tournament will be. As an AoEO player it is also important to me and it will provide me the opportunity to prove that I'm one of the best AoEO players in the world.

PF2K - When we first heard about PvP coming back we were all super excited to be able to play the game again! But then Zuta announced the tournament, and the excitement level went through the roof!! It's great, I'm really looking forward to the tournament.

TheMista - This is a chance to play the game competitively again, and a chance to show everyone who is the king.

Zerton - I am very excited about it, since AoEO PvP was shut down for pretty much exactly 3 years and now some passionate members of the community were finally able to bring it back, and not only that but Zuta was generous enough to immeditately sponsor 500$ out of his own pocket to host a tournament with the help of the ESO Community. This is the biggest motivation for me to play AoEO right now and I'm grateful for the opportunity to compete in this game again, which was provided by everyone who is working on this project.
The Zuta Zuta Classic also happens to be only the 4th AoEO tournament that TheMista has participated in. Are you excited for the chance to compete in a Bo(x) against him, and do you think you have what it takes to bring him down?
Carnage - Its good to see TheMista back since he is probably the best player that ever touched the game. Can I take him down? I can. Will i? Probably not.

GiveUAnxiety - I'm excited to see a great tournament organized and to see TheMista play in another AoEO tournament. He has won all past AoEO tournaments that he played in, however he did not win them without dropping a single match. He did have some competition, and the competition is now stronger than ever before. There are definitely a few players that have a legitimate shot at beating him in the tournament, and I am one of those players!

PF2K - I am close friends with TheMista, we've known each other for many years now. It's going to be fun playing against him and while I'm not sure I can "bring him down" this time, I hope I can give him a good run for his money and give the viewers some fun games to watch!

Zerton - Everybody knows TheMista is a great player, he was one of the top players in like 5-6 different RTS games, a genre which he has played over something like the last 18 years. He was already playing RTS games competitively while I was still trying to figure out how to wipe my own butt. He has probably lost more games than I will ever play. I will have to beat him if I want to win this tournament, and I do hope we meet somewhere in the higher rounds like the Semifinal or Final. Taking down such an accomplished player would be a huge feat.
(To TheMista): do you think anyone has a solid chance of kicking you out of the tournament?
TheMista - There are plenty of decent players competing in this upcoming tournament, but I dont think I can find a solid threat in them. There will be tough games for sure, but i will end up victorious like a good king should.
There are a lot of up-and-coming players within the current AoEO player roster, could you name one or two that most excite you about their play? What about them excites you?
Carnage - Not really. There was a lot of hype around 'good' aom and aoe3 players that will 'take over' aoeo. What I've seen so far is top-kek. These kids better step their game up so I can at least remember their names.

GiveUAnxiety - Borg is one player that comes to mind. He was a really good player in the early days of AoEO history, however he was not around for the last year or so before the servers closed, during a time when most tournaments occured. I'm excited to see him back, he is improving very quickly and will be one player to keep an eye on throughout the tournament. Aiz11 is another player that excites me. The ESOC community knows that Aiz is an amazing AOE3 player and he is known for his unconventional playstyles. Everyone loves to watch his crazy strategies and gameplay. He has brought his unconventional playstyle to AoEO and I cant wait to see what weird strategies he ends up doing in this tournament.

Zerton,PF2K, TheMista - That would probably have to be RecoN, who is also a fairly strong RTS player and is pretty new to the scene. He practises this game a lot, more than I have seen anybody else practise. Even before PvP got added into celeste, he was grinding vs the AI, refining his builds and execution, watching all 1v1 videos he could find on YouTube. He is taking it very seriously it seems, and that's something I really admire. I think he is gonna do very well in the tournament, could easily end up in the top 4, if not higher. As far as playstyle goes, he plays very solid with strong macro behind it. Could be a very dangerous player if the old AoEO players don't take him seriously.
Any civilizations or strategies that will be a player favorite?
Carnage - Hard to say. Since we are actively balancing the game, civ or strategy abuse isn't really a thing anymore. Things are not perfect yet but definitely better than they ever been before.

GiveUAnxiety - Greek is currently my main civ, however I do have a lot of tricks up my sleeve and you will have to wait and tune into the tournament streams to see these tricks in action.

PF2K - Well, I guess most people already know that I'm going to be playing Persia a lot, so there's that. I'll try to give them good games to watch.

TheMista - Greek 1-1-1 !

Zerton - Civilization picks are gonna be very dependent on maps and future balance patches that will get put out before and during the tournament. And for strategies, I'd generally predict fairly greedy play with fast Town-Centers and quick teching.
Who are you most looking forward to defeating in the Zuta Zuta Classic?
Carnage - I don't care really. I haven't had the chance to practice enough so I take the brackets as they come and try to go as far as I can. Rivalries will come later.

GiveUAnxiety - I will be ready to takedown whoever is in my path. Some of the scariest players are TheMista, cG_Eery, cG_ZertoN, and cG_Carnage. They are among the top players in the world and I look forward to having the chance to eliminate them from the tournament.

PF2K - Honestly I'm not one for bantering and trash-talking, so there's not really someone in my mind that I would really like beating. I'm a nice guy! :D

TheMista - My previous self! I want to become a better player than I used to be so I decided to promote myself to the rank of an Emperor

Zerton - I don't even have to think about this, it's not even a question that has to be Trolerkules (Carnage). People often say we have a rivalry because we share a lot of attributes: We are both top players, we are both german, friends and from the same Clan. But I disagree. Rivalries are supposed to be close matchups, you're never sure who is gonna win the next time. But it's not close, I always crush him. I hope we will meet in the tournament and i can prove once and for all who is the true #1 German Sensation.
GUA hugely overestimating my chances here I think :P

There simply isn't enough room for me to innovate in a game where I don't have much game knowledge (meta or otherwise) to start with. People have told me some standard BOs, and I do thank them for that, but I don't particularly like following standard BOs. At the end of the day in aoeo it's still going to be opponent in their comfort zone, and me outside of mine. Would rather shake things up, but it's also pretty difficult to get a 1v1 game to test things at the times I'm available.

all i'm hearing are excuses for yet another tournament disappointment. We poor Aiz fans always think this is the on where he will finally win it all, and then he loses 3-0 to rondon.
