Short Civ & Map Descriptions

Post by DayoftheNinja »

You can get detailed information on what's included in WoL on our site, but I thought I might write up some quick descriptions just to help streamline some choices when it comes to picking civs and maps. Please keep in mind that despite developing this mod, I don't actually play it and some information may be outdated. Apologies for that.

Maps
The WoL team generally tries to focus on maps with unique events or looks, and locations not covered by the base game. Below are the maps included in the Cheese Hunt map pool.
Acre: The dense rainforest provides a significant amount of wood, but there are no gold mines; Acre is Brazil’s greatest national producer of rubber and thus coin is gathered from rubber trees, which are recognizable by their golden glow. Players are separated by one of the Amazon’s tributaries, and navigable fords can be found on the shores of the river. Securing these will be the key to victory. There are no trade routes, but up to four different types of natives can appear here.
Asunción: Fighting takes place within the Paraguayan capital. Colorful ipê trees dot the map, and extra food can be gathered by destroying houses within the city blocks.
Cave: Mines are scattered throughout the labyrinthine cave, but wood is in short supply. Crates dot the map, but dominance will be decided by who can control the forests that appear where the light shines through.
Congo: Venture into the Heart of Darkness in the dense Congo Jungle. There is no fog of war on this map; instead, blackmap resets anywhere that you don't have line-of-sight. You'll need to trust your memory to find resources and track your opponent's movements.
Dallol: Dallol is the hottest place on the planet, mainly inhospitable, but rich in salts. Colorful hot springs deliver a surreal landscape. Trees ring the edge of the map and salt mines dot the center, but all resources are scarce.
Sahel: The Sahara meets the Savannah. Trees are scarce in this map, divided by a trade route. You may either start in the desert or the savannah.
Tuscany: This gorgeous map is rich in resources. Players start with grape vines, but trees are generally only found at the corners. The map is crossed by many trade routes, each lined with scenic cypress trees.
Watering Hole: Based on the Age of Mythology map of the same name, this African Oasis features a wealth of unique fauna.
Cultures
Most of the original civilizations have varying degrees of changes, but their overall gameplay is unchanged. Below is a list of WoL civilizations by culture, a grouping of civilizations with shared units, buildings, techs, age-ups, and other features.
Europeans
Italians
Focus on Religion and Espionage
 • Merchants gather resources; Architects build
 • Have a unique Temple and Spy
 • Start with Catholicism selected
 • Have weaker military units
Maltese
Focus on Archaic Units and Defensive Buildings
 • Walls upgrade on age-up
 • Can spawn outposts around their Town Center
 • Unit roster is based around AoE2
 • Have Trebuchets, which can launch a 90kg projectile over 300 meters
Habsburgs
Focus on Mercenaries
 • Military units are mercenaries, costing more coin and population but are much stronger
 • Start with few bonuses, but Age-up by marrying into another civilization, gaining their bonuses.
American Natives
Inca
Focus on Coin
 • Villagers trickle coin
 • Buildings cost coin
Tupi
Focus on Surprise
 • Don't use coin
 • Buildings build quickly
 • Upgraded units can stealth
 • Have 3 different villagers, each with access to different resources.
Mapuche
Focus on XP
 • Get extra XP bounties
 • Villagers trickle XP
 • Instead of a home city, the 5 Tribal Council members exist on the battlefield, meaning you can research multiple shipments at once but can also lose access to shipments if they die.
Latin Americans
Similar in gameplay to Europeans, Latin Americans have the Post Office, which allows them to ally with an immigrant nation.
Brazilians
Focus on Agriculture
 • African Slaves gather slower from hunts but faster from Mills and Plantations. They start with a low build limit that can be increased, as well as their gather rates.
 • Have farming techs instead of hunting techs
 • Voluntarios are heavily massable but very weak
 • Have access to an extra Religious and Immigrant option.
Paraguayans
Focus on Factories
 • Villagers cost no population and are powerful fighters, but gather very slowly and can only build basic buildings.
 • Engineers build most buildings and gather wood quickly.
 • Works are single-resource factories that cost population
 • Military buildings spawn units
Argentines
Focus on Cavalry and Herding
 • Settlers and Explorer are mounted
 • Cavalry's speed increases each age
 • Herdables reproduce over time
Colombians
Focus on Guerillas and Revolution
 • Villagers cannot gather food, but instead trickle it over time
 • Destroyed buildings spawn a group of weak Guerillas
Mexicans
Focus on Outlaws
 • Explorer has a bonus against other Explorers
 • Start with a secondary Town Center that works like a Fort
 • Villagers recoup some of their cost when killed
 • Techs come with Pistoleros
Chileans
Focus on Pairs
 • Units are trained in groups of two
 • Can spawn outposts around their Town Center
 • Rotos, which act as dual villagers, can be trained from trading Posts
Peruvians
Focus on Defense
 • Building-dependent systems are enabled an age early
 • Military buildings shoot when garrisoned with villagers
 • Train Decoys, cheaper units that cannot attack but distract enemy armies.
Anglos
Anglo civs can choose a party each age, giving them access to varied bonuses, units, techs, and cards.
Americans
Focus on Technology
 • Have an extra technology in every research line
 • Can choose a Great Company, which brings powerful unique technologies.
Canadians
Focus on Trees and Allies
 • Buildings spawn Maple Trees when built
 • Have extra Team Cards
 • Require Wood to Age-up.
Australians
Focus on conflicting Parties
 • Colonial Units are more expensive and cost more population, but are more powerful in return
 • Aboriginal Units cost less but rely on tactics like stealth
 • Villagers come with sheep.
Africans
The Africans have the most varied and unique gameplay of any culture, and age up by researching techs in their Library.
Egyptians
Focus on Mobility
 • Their buildings are replaced by caravans, which can move freely when not training units.
 • Explorer can empower villagers
 • Effective raiders, but weak military.
Ethiopians
Focus on Buildings
 • Town Center spawns Porters, which can transform into buildings
 • Buildings have extra HP
Zulu
Focus on Micro
 • All units mature from Youths, which are spawned by TCs and Matriarchs
 • Units must be trained individually.
Balkans
Balkans are similar in style to Europeans, but have a handful of unique buildings, many of which they Age-up from instead of the Town Center.
Greeks
Focus on Fishing
 • Only Balkan with Politician options in the Dock
 • Have cards that become more powerful if the right politician is selected
 • Destroyed buildings trickle XP
 • Docks spawn Fishing Boats
 • Can build Fishing Traps, which act as Mills for your Fishing Boats.
Bulgarians
Focus on Peasantry
 • Villagers are stronger and can be trained from most buildings, with an extra bonus against Cavalry
 • Can't train military units until Age IV
 • Lategame military units are very strong
 • Have some free Shipments.
Romanians
(NOTE: The Romanian HC is bugged, and players will not be able to select cards)
Focus on Fear
 • Villagers are trained from wagons rather than the TC
 • Can task Pet Bears at the Circus to speed up unit production
 • Lower enemy morale with fear-based powers
Serbians
Focus on Attrition
 • Dead units boost your nearby units
 • Can burn their buildings down to damage enemies and deny a bounty.
Would anyone be so kind as to give me a list of the names of all different types of villagers for each civ in the proto file? For a lot of civs it seems really difficult to figure out exactly how good certain builds are without knowledge of the base gather rates for each of this villagers, and they don't seem to be very easy to look up in the proto file.

Edit: Also, is there anyway to see how much faith you have when playing as a civ that also has export? e.g. China

That sounds like the kind of thing a pedo says to a child. "I've got something even better than that :)"

Lel ^^,
It wasn't what Mitoe was quite after unfortunately but if anyone is interested you can pm me, its pretty cool. It's basically and ESOC Assistant which shows you the effects of every nat eco upgrade, what they do/civ gather rates/e.c.t basically everything.

@sirmusket Mitoe's request is about WoL civs so XaKOps' Economic calculator won't help
