My PC performance drops while playing aoe3
My PC performance drops while playing aoe3
Hey guys, I just formatted my PC and it works perfectly fine except when it comes to play aoe3. I've done this before and I never had this issue.
It's not smooth at all sound fails, image gets choppy and slowed down. Unplayable. (it also affects other open programs or internet browser)
¿Any ideas about cause and how to fix it? Thanks.

Re: My PC performance drops while playing aoe3
You have to reinstall drivers after formatting, do you not?
Pay more attention to detail.
Re: My PC performance drops while playing aoe3
Are you sure you your graphic card is responsble for running aoe3 and not your chipset (integrated graphic card)

What computer and laptop are you using?
If you just reformatted you also got rid of the drivers for your graphics card. if you haven't reinstalled those drivers then you will not be able to play
You can hit windowskey+R then type in "dxdiag". Go to the "display" tab and screenshot that for us. Then we should be able to help you find the right drivers.
Re: My PC performance drops while playing aoe3
Thank you all. I updated drivers and issue seems fixed, I should have guessed by myself lol.

After a coupe of games I noticed the problem is only partially solved, game isn't as smooth at it should be :(

You can check your FPS with the EP build-in ftp counter. What is the average you get during a game?

The FPS range is 50-100, average 65-70. But several times/minute it drops to 20-25 which pisses me off (it remembers me to that what happens when you check your enemy deck, not sure if everyone gets that lag spike). It's not the 1st time I format my PC, other times game was smooth as silk. Ad by the way, other games with higher requirements are unplayable now.

How can I know?
Do you have an amd card or a Nvidia? If it's Nvidia you can right click on your desktop and go to the Nvidia control panel and it will tell you what the default setting is and you can change it for specific programs.

It's Nvidia. I went to control panel and set Nvidia processor as global (it was set ''automatic'') and nothing changed, 16 FPS spike

First go to device manager and uninstall the Nvidia drivers. Than restart the machine, it should scan for changes and reinstall them automatically. Than go into the Nvidia control panel and specifically set aoe to run from your Nvidia chip.

It's a 2012 laptop which used to run Battlefield 3. Now it's a bit outdated but shouldn't be a problem.

what os? That's still a pretty beast of a processor for a laptop, but 4gb of ram is bad particularly if you're running Windows 10.....yoqpasa wrote:gibson wrote:what processor do you have and what graphics card?yoqpasa wrote:Nothing changed

W7. And as I said, it ran aoe3 perfectly fine before formating :(
I tried disabling my integrated graphic card and game didn't launch and got error message. Does it mean anything?

I would say that indicates you've been running the game off your integrated card the whole time.
What if you right-click the game's exe and choose "Run with graphics processor" -> "High-performance NVIDIA processor"?

@EAGLEMUT @gibson @Rikikipu @kami_ryu
The next time I played the game problems came back. I'm posting some screenshots:
This is what pops out when I right click on the aoe3 launcher as Eaglemut suggested. I'm not allowed , wondering if that's the cause.

So I opened NVIDIA control panel and set 610M as global and specificly for aoe3. I set it for PhysX, no clue if that changes anyhting tbh.

So now I go run>dxdiag and as you can see 610M is absent, just the integrated graphic card

Sorry for being annoying

there is some freeware from Nvidia its called GeForceExperience or sth, you can use that to manually set which programs use certain GPUs, it has a lot more options than the control panel, maybe give it a shot..

Yeah good point, the problem is that software doesn't recognize aoe3 for some reason. It does work with other games such us heroes of the storm, it's something...
Re: My PC performance drops while playing aoe3
hmm that's strange
it's like your GPU doesn't want to work with aoe3.
i'm unfamiliar with nvidia GPUs unfortunately and how their drivers work. maybe you could try an older graphics driver, or a newer version
sometimes it's hard to get these things right. try 10 different solutions and see which one actually sticks
