GTX 970 "screeching," only when running AoE
Alt. title: GTX 970 screeching.
So pretty much this, or something like that. Something in my computer is whining, a screeching noise when I launch aoe. It's not a fan. It's an immediate sound, and it disappears when I alt-tab, and returns when I re-alt-tab. And it changes inflection when I click on different menus in game, such as decks, and home cities, etc. And it is only when running AoE. It is nonexistent with other games, such as ARK survival, battlefront 2, some other star wars games, etc. More, graphically "demanding" games. The temps are all normal, fan speed is normal. The PSU is adequate. I've done a lot of googling, can't find much on it. Any tips?
P.S. I built this sucker myself. My first build, did a lot of research, watched and re watched youtube tutorials, and everything worked the first try. I dissipated static electricity and such, but my main concern was always that I fucked something up. But then I get a call from a fellow AoE player who just recieved a new, pre-built PC also with a GTX 970, with the exact same problem to a tee. So I don't think I messed anything up.
Any other fellow GTX 970 AoE players? Ever experience anything like this? Google doesn't exactly get many results for AoE GTX 970 whining noises. Figured this is my best bet.

Coil whine, or more specifically inductor coil whine, is a phenomenon where a video card or power supply (anything with a power delivery system in it) makes a screeching sound when the game runs at very high frame rates (ex: > 200).
Aoe3 is not a demanding game, so you probably get ~ 300+ fps on ultra or something. To fix, turn on vsync and limit frame rate to 60 or 120 using a gpu bios software (EVGA Precision X/MSI Afterburner).

Hmm very interesting. Is Afterburner needed with vsync already enabled?noissance wrote:Coil whine, or more specifically inductor coil whine, is a phenomenon where a video card or power supply (anything with a power delivery system in it) makes a screeching sound when the game runs at very high frame rates (ex: >' 200).

even with vsync, the frame rate will be all weird with input lag. to fix, limit fps to 60 fps or refresh rate of monitor.

Yep, coil whine.
If it's a new card you can wait a bit, stay in the ESO lobby overnight (or Crysis menu), let the card whine overnight. The card whines at super high FPS (300 for example). It's said that the whining of the cables will heat up the insulation around it and slightly remold it to be better deal with the noise.
My 7970 was a whiner when I first got it, but it's much better these days.

I have a 970 and have never even heard of these issues.
Garja if you're looking for a gpu you should still get a 970 great bang for buck.

I don't have a 970, I have a Sapphire Dual-X 7970.
Nice having a silent card, I guess I'll chalk up EVGA as having coil-free card.

Very Interesting. This would explain why it is sometimes worse than other times. Now that I think about it, it seems to whine less in a warmer environment. I will have to pay attention to this more in the future.incog wrote:Yep, coil whine.

If its not too late, RMA the gpu and get a reference model or a used 980. Reference models are loud, but u can watercool them like I did with my 980 ti.
