The Major Problem for the Common Man...

Post by abbadan »

,,,is that no one under 2nd lieut plays the patch!!!
I have them & love them for the single player games, but I have tried to host a game 3 times and no one comes. It's depressing to see 20 rooms that I can't enter and NO ONE coming into mine.
Thoughts? (Note: the thought, "Why don't you work on your game until you get good enough to play with better players?" is not particularly constructive in this case.)

I agree, this is the main challenge. Any suggestions for how to get more adoption are always welcomed!

Its just that most PR20- players are casual players, so they don't bother to google stuff about AOE and they probably arent affected too much by these small balance changes. So I think the best way to reach them is by advertising anti cheat.

The main problem (IMO) is that the patch does very little for team; arguably, earlier iterations might have actually been worse than RE. Team is wayyyy more common below pr25.

Being able to play rated on the good maps is a major bonus, but most low PR players don't understand why having more resources/more consistent spawns is necessary and worth installing a patch for.

Cheat isn't actually much of an issue at low PR, believe it or not. Nobody uses QS and cheaters will quickly surpass PR20 so it's actually pretty easy to avoid them.

I am 2nd lt and I mostly play on EP. Granted I mostly just chose to get rekt by people better than me, but it is still quite fun. There aren't a lot of people tho. You just need to get like a group of people to play with that are on around the same times you normally are and you'll prolly be able to find some games on EP.

I'm not sure how you host your games on EP, but if you aren't advertising that you are on EP, people won't swap over to play it. Personally if i see someone my rank hosting a game on EP I'll swap over but people don't load up EP first. Almost everyone will start on RE because that's where the majority of the games are. Other than that, jump on discord or Skype or message people on your friends list to play EP. I'd say about 5-10% of people below pr20 know EP exists. If you tell them they might come but without that, they simply won't know about it.

For the common man to be able to find people playing the patch, the elites have to be playing the patch. If ALL colonels play the patch, then a lt colonel will easily be inclined to play the patch too, and then the majors and captains will easily follow. Those are the easiest group to convince. Then the 1st lts might follow partially and some 2nd lts will, although honestly 2nd lt just isn't a skill-level were players are truly dedicated to competitive play so they would care less or not even know about a patch like EP.

The 'EP failure' is that the EP didn't manage to convert all of the top players. Honestly it's hard to blame people, team struggles surely are one issue, top players from the community not really being persistent in playing it is another. The biggest issue probably is that a very significant part of the community, especially the asian qs guys, just refused to even look into it. It made it impossible for EP to truly work out, so that's kinda sad.

Maybe this gives opportunity to make a similair sort of patch but then actually make it a gameplay overhaul.

There were some OBSsessions last summer which were quite enjoyable  with even a few ms/2nd lieuts ! Maybe we could try to do it again after the release of the new patch?

Something I've noticed as a west coast NA player is that NA and Asia don't play the patch nearly as much as peak pop time in Europe. This is probably making the division even worse, since due to the time difference between Europe and Asia/NA there doesn't tend to be much player overlap. If I ever want to play an EP game, I would 100% have to go on in EU evenings (which is my morning/noon, when I usually have other life stuff to do).

I'd say the best way to find games is by scheduling ahead of time through discord. Eventually you'll learn all the players who play during your time and scheduling will become easier from there, plus you'll have good mates to help you with coaching/improvement and vice versa. If this doesn't work I guess you can also just host unr games on re but with EP maps, since balance is still similar and most EP games are unr anyways.

^Remember: there is no such a thing as a terrible pun.

Also when you play with someone nice, add them to your friends list so that you can play with them again in the future :!:
