In AoE2, players have the option of making "trash" (food/wood units) units when the gold runs out. They typically aren't as good as gold units and melt when put up against them, but the point is that players still have a viable path to winning the game aside from selling at the market for more gold. I've always thought it a shame that this concept didn't carry over to AoE3. It sucks that you almost auto-lose if you are pushed off gold.

Which is why we should definitely consider the ideas from the previous page before releasing the next EP iteration
