Re: European forum members: thoughts on immigration?
@Dolan Ok great, this is a good discussion to be having. Let's think about why fundamentalism has become so popular in the Middle East instead of dismissing arabs as barbaric -- why is sharia law prevalent? There must be a reason. I think it is because misguided Western foreign policy in the past ce...

Re: European forum members: thoughts on immigration?
@Metis, Sorry the overlay text on the map obscured the legend and I assumed it was modern muslim attacks vs crusade attacks since that's what we were discussing. My bad for misreading the map. Right, I'm not trying to make the point that the Muslims attacks are due to resentment about the Crusades. ...

Re: European forum members: thoughts on immigration?
I'm not trying to "implant guilt in European minds" - stop trying to play the victim here. I'm simply comparing two analogous events. Your explanation of the causes of the Crusades just reinforces my comparison of the two. Just like the Crusades were fought for a multitude of non-religious...

Re: European forum members: thoughts on immigration?
@Metis, comparing maps of the two is disingenuous at best and you're smart enough to know that. We live in a globalized age where transportation is virtually instant and free -- you can't honestly expect that the crusades would look the same on a map. @Dolan I attempt to make no argument about the m...

It seems like everyone is echoing my initial thoughts, which reinforces my decision to go with the industry offer. Now I have to decide between 3 offers by similar firms that all pay about the same for similar work...

Re: European forum members: thoughts on immigration?
Just because we're not mass importing Iraqi oil right now does not mean that oil had no influence in our decision to invade Iraq. Despite the outcomes, the presence of large oil fields was undoubtedly a large factor in the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq. Many members of the Bush cabin...

Re: European forum members: thoughts on immigration?
What's done is done: the West REALLY screwed up the Middle East, and now they're starting to feel the blowback. A LOT of muslims living in the Middle East don't even know about 9/11 -- their experience is just western powers coming out of nowhere to bomb and kill their people for ostensibly no real ...

I don't, though. I have less than $1000 in the bank right now -- I'm a broke college student.

Re: How important is money to you?
I go to a bottom tier Ivy League, got a good GPA taking tough courses, and am reasonably good at networking. I actually got offers from every place I applied to lol. This salary is nothing though (obviously its very generous and for that I'm grateful), but my friends who are going into investment ba...

Re: How important is money to you?
@Metis, Things are a bit different in econ (for example, full professors at good r1 universities make 200-300k for 9 months of work), but generally you're spot on. I'm very familiar with how admissions/academia work but that's a conversation for another day. Also, the private job also has an expecta...

Re: How important is money to you?
That you even ask tells me that you don't have a passion for research -- go the money route. I'm not sure that's a fair characterization to make. I spent most of my college career doing research and preparing for a PhD in economics, but some recent introspection has left me uncertain about jumping ...

Re: How important is money to you?
If you've got a job offer for 6 figures it means you have a really good resume, so can't you take the research job and whenever you decide to get more money you can still find a good paying job? And if you can find 6 figure jobs now, in a few years it'll be even easier with all your experience. Tha...

How important is money to you?
I'm finishing up college this year, and I'm deciding between two job offers. One is a good private gig that will pay me six figures in a pretty cheap city. The other is a research gig for a pretty well known government organization in NYC that pays... well a government salary. I think I might enjoy ...

No I completely agree with you Metis. I think this is a PR move and only really, really exceptional people without a degree will get a job there over qualified degree holders.

Is NYC really that much hotter than Chicago? It gets 100 here most summers for a handful of days. And we get bad winters too, its hard to imagine NYC is more drastic on both ends of the extremes. I really am starting to hate winter here tho, which seems like its 8 months of the year.. YA the last 2...

Yeah but youre in Michigan and your friends are at NYC haha Thats my point. Saying I make 100k is meaningless because if I make 80k and cost of living is less I bank more in the long term. I can give some perspective from what people in econ-related fields expect at a pretty good school. If you go into ibanking or management consulting at prestigious places (Goldman, JP for ibanking' McKinsey, Bain, etc. for consulting), you should expect a salary (once bonuses and other forms of comp...

Getting this thread back on track: Medinos I'm not going to lie and pretend that my life has had as many hardships as yours. However, I've been suffering from pretty severe depression and anxiety for the past 6-7 years (I'm 21 now). I was at a point in my life where I was also suicidal just a couple...
