Re: Should you target weaker or stronger units first?

I think what it comes down to is how much damage you need to deal to them to reduce their damage dealt to you by some amount.

In the skirm/huss example, let's suppose we have some amount of vet skirms facing opponent vet skirm and vet huss.
The huss effectively have 384 * 5/4 (range resist) * 4/3 (ski .....

Re: Hey Guys

When you say high-level AoE2, what do you mean in terms of Voobly rating?

You can check out the Strategy Wall for guides. Since AoE3 civs are fairly distinct, I would recommend you pick one as your main civ with which to get familiar in depth first, and then learn the basics of another 2-3 civs so yo .....

Re: Spain vs French

It's not a common matchup since not many people seem to play Spain.

From the few times I've played it around 1st Lt level, I think Spain is usually proactive in deciding what strategy they go for, while France responds to what is happening. France wins the long game due to better eco, so it's on Spai .....

Re: Select/Show Units hotkey question

There is a separate slider in the settings right next to where you turned off camera centering. That slider defines a time interval.
If you tap your selection key twice within that time interval (and no other keys or clicks in between), it will center. If you tap twice but with more time in between, .....

Re: A new format for competitive play

I think the AoE2 ECL pick/ban draft format for maps worked well there.

For example for a best of 3, there might be a pool of 5 maps, without any order. Player A picks a map for the first game, then player B picks a map for the second game, then each player bans one map, and the final game is played o .....

Re: ZeroEmpires: The story of Escape, the hardest year of my life

I think it's important to keep in mind that people have different levels of risk appetite/tolerance, depending on their mindset and where they are in their lives.

Clearly, for someone who is saving at most a few hundred dollars each month it would seem like a crazy proposition to invest 100k into an .....

Re: ZeroEmpires: The story of Escape, the hardest year of my life

I don't think the retrospective armchair advice given out here is particularly helpful or necessarily even valid. Some people are making assumptions about Escape's business model and funding/revenue strategy (or lack thereof), and then go to great lengths explaining why it shouldn't have been done t .....

By the time you have 150f 150c to spare while continuing your vil production, you're probably pretty close to your first shipment anyway. By the time you actually collected the treasure, chances are you have it coming in already.
In most builds there is no second age 1 shipment worth sending, so the .....

Following up in fortress then, if the opponent has a good number of huss left or is making lots of cuirs, what do you suggest as meat shield for skirm/goon?

Pure skirm/goon seems to lose to skirm/cuir (or skirm/uhlan, arquebus/cav, ...) because the cuirs have enough staying power to kill all the skir .....

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I don't think there are many smurfs during the times I play and in my opponent PR range (20-28).

Someone trying to quickly deflate their rating is easy to spot from their game history, there would be a lot of losses with just above 2 minutes of game duration. From what .....

Perhaps it depends on the time of day, for me playing at PR23 I hardly encounter anyone who looks like an obvious smurf to me (opponents from 2nd Lt to Captain). Occasionally there are people with >80% win rates, but those I just kick and pest since clearly something's wrong there.

I wouldn't care .....

Re: [EP] Change the Dutch flag

Not all of the game's civilizations are actual empires, some of them are more like cultural groups with loose political bonds, if any. Germany in that time period is one of those, it just stands out because all the other European civs are political entities.
In that sense, I see Germany as similar to .....

Re: Should it be time to use real-life pictures instead of avatars

I responded with Bad, although I think it might work in the late stages of the tournament, maybe starting from semifinals.
Earlier than that and I think the problem of turning away some players impacts the community more than the benefit of recognizable player faces.

There are all sorts of reasons why .....

The Chinese pikes are pronounced as "Chiang". That's a soft CH sound, not a K and not a QU.
The Fuchuan likewise is pronounced with a soft CH, not a K.

I don't see how that would lead to awesome series.

You'd get players forced into civs they're unfamiliar with, executing subpar builds, in matchups and maps where one civ might be strongly favored over another. Seeing one player luck into a civ they're strong with and smash their opponent who ended u .....
