Re: US Politics Megathread
To be fair to them, I think that's more of an "ESOC is dead" problem than a "conservatives are dodging discussion" problem, although they've been known to do so

I don't know anything about Singapore in 1960, but I'm sure their success story required very specific circumstances that don't apply to Gaza

Re: Israeli-Palestinian conflict
The situation is quite different, and Greece is not exactly a poster boy of economic development. Israel is. Eastern Europe isn't even ahead of Israel yet, and you think Gaza could do it in a few decades? I did mention "Israelis could end up looking for better jobs in Gaza" as a possible o...

Re: Israeli-Palestinian conflict
The incentive will come from the political agreement signed by both Israel and Hamas, with the USA, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and other states included as guarantees of the plan. Which side could even threaten or attack the implementation of this plan? Everything will happen in steps and t...

Re: Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Post-war Europe was a continent of laws, democracies, and mostly free markets. It's nothing like post-war Gaza will be. Lawlessness is very bad for business. There's no one on the ground there who has an interest in disrupting construction companies that will come to build housing for them. That's n...

Re: Israeli-Palestinian conflict
When you have a million people in a small space, there's politics going on. The fact that it's not a centralized state doesn't mean there's no politics. Anyway, the point is that when things are as much of a mess as they are there, business can't flourish. Business needs the rule of law. People don'...

Re: Israeli-Palestinian conflict
What you're missing imo is that Gaza isn't politically stable and if there are economic opportunities, they will be largely squandered because the conditions for business to flourish aren't there. I don't see the necessary changes happening in a matter of decades. Relevant: https://eso-community.net...

Re: Microsoft (1975-2025) 🕯️
I hear you, I don't use my second screen all the time for work and I'm not saying it would be a significant limiting factor. But only a small productivity boost would be needed to make it worth it and in the scenarios where you do want it, it's very nice to have the option. Say the monitor costs 200...

You're programming and your work doesn't offer a second screen? Have you asked? The argument that it boosts your productivity by more than it costs would be trivial to make.

Re: Microsoft (1975-2025) 🕯️
yeah i get that. often i'll have multiple smaller windows, but sometimes i'll fullscreen one. my primary screen is pretty dynamic, but the second screen has a couple of static windows. i find that it's not convenient to use the second screen dynamically because when it is a mess like primary, i can...

Re: Microsoft (1975-2025) 🕯️
I don't work on one screen and certainly not in one program. My workflow involves many apps and many windows, I'm just not actively looking at more than one of them at a time. I think what you describe makes sense if you have to constantly switch between apps, meaning every few seconds or so. If it'...

Re: Microsoft (1975-2025) 🕯️
You mentioned in response to me saying I don't have multiple visible windows that it must be nice to be able to focus on one thing at a time, and that you feel like your brain is scrambled because of all the distractions. That suggests: 1) You use the multiple visible windows to do multiple things a...

And your inbox teams and notes are all visible , arranged next to each other? Why? Why not just tab into them when you need them? Re: Microsoft (1975-2025) 🕯️
Distractions that you have open on the same screen? I mean, you're kind of asking to be distracted at that point. Help me understand: In what scenarios do you have multiple windows visible on the same screen? Other than temporary smaller windows like settings I guess. In other words, in what scenari...

During a time when what we need most of all is strong democracies, to prevent a future where AI excludes humans from the economy and we have no political recourse to implement UBI.

Also if you do know what you're doing. People make typos or just mistakes, even when they're very smart and competent. That there is no "are you sure?" with potentially massively impactful commands like rm or chmod is just bad UI design. "Oh well you made a mistake" uh huh, well ...

Yeah.. I encourage you all to try Ubuntu. It's free and it works (once you set it up) Even if we ignore the fact that I ever play any game, "it's slightly better" would, even if true, not come close to being enough justification to make such a big change, having spent decades building up ...
