Re: US Politics Megathread
I am politically "right" (i.e. culturally slightly right of the middle and economically as well) and i still find that arguing that the NS wasn't an (extreme) right wing ideology is far-fetched to say the least. It also isn't a coincidence that monarchists and conservatives were of paramou...

Re: US Politics Megathread
Also worth noting that many of these companies only got big due to the NS and the cheap workers they got assigned. They profited a lot and had little reason to object to Nazi rule.

Re: US Politics Megathread
One clearly sees that being left is correlated with being progressive, and that being right is correlated with being conservative. We could reasonably summarize this data into a singular axis. As is always the case, by reducing this spectrum to a 1d spectrum we lose some information, but due to the...

Re: US Politics Megathread
Really? Iirc most of the german literature on this is quite specific and adamant that if we are being precise fascism is quite different from Nationalsozialismus though they share a bunch of similarities and common roots. Might be a difference between german/other language literature or just me misr...

Re: US Politics Megathread
Also, to reiterate another important point, that i think is sometimes conflated: being without work was anathema in the existing socialistic countries, because it would have proven that the idea of equal people all doing their part without exploitation isn't really working. Realistically, being with...

Re: US Politics Megathread
One should not forget that National Socialism wasn't a monolithic block and went through a number of different phases with substantial changes. An example is the Night of the Long Knives , when the entire leadership of the Nazi paramilitary organization Sturmabteilung (SA) was purged with most kill...

Re: US Politics Megathread
Yeah that's why I'm still not convinced that fascism is correctly classified on the right of the political spectrum. It can't be a coincidence that Italian fascism appeared from grassroots trade union movements. If they ever defined themselves to be on the right side of the spectrum, it's probably ...

u2012 Sorry for not yet answering, am having a busy time right now. I bookmarked your post so i might answer some time from now. Anyways, just a quick conversation starter regarding Russia: what do we think of the fact that Russia was indeed a colonial power, being comparable to t...

Re: European politics
If it is that simple and it is all about the supply side, then how do you explain the emergence of new parties? Not too different from how new corporations are established. There is a handful of people with a certain personality profile who tend to have initiative and organise things to set up a gr...

Re: European politics
If it is that simple and it is all about the supply side, then how do you explain the emergence of new parties? I don't think we can really argue that the ideal of democracy that people had at some point of rational, informed citizens voting on what represents their interests best can be upheld, but...

Re: European politics
Are we sure that that would improve the output efficiency though? I am not certain that passing some basic knowledge tests would improve the decision making process. It also would be problematic for two reasons a) ideology or legitimacy. Our current understanding of democracy, euqality, and freedom ...

Re: European politics
It would be particularly hard to implement as someone would have to judge that knowledge or devise a scale for said knowledge meaning a concentration of power and arbitrarisness and starting the cycle anew. Technocratic forms of government seem very alluring but i don't think there's a way for them ...

Re: European politics
Had a graph at some point showing estimates of who gains the most from the Union, split by regions (not countries). Unsurprisingly, Paris, London and all of Germany profited the most, with the Benelux-States also being on top. But try to explain that to the average german dude. To be honest the EU a...

Re: European politics
Why Greece in particular? What criteria do they not fulfill? I'm thinking more like it'd be like when Romania and Bulgaria joined. Those countries having a much weaker economy than some of the western EU countries (eg the Netherlands) caused a lot of people gobbling up jobs in the richer countries ...

Re: European politics
Yeah same. Realistically it would result in another Greece unfortunately (that is, letting a state join for mainly ideological reasons without them fulfilling the Copenhagen Criteria and acqiuring the acquis communautaire, inducing significant weak points into the Union. For these reasons i don't th...

Re: European politics
Addendum: i think authoritarian regimes have an innate advantage in deterrence games, as they can more plausibly assure that they don't give a fuck about their population, or any life beyond their own for that matter. I would disagree that splitting Ukraine is a large or the main goal of this war. W...

Hope American democracy will be resilient enough to weather that storm. Kinda funny how people like Mitt Romney, who essentially everyone hated on back then now seem l...

If you listen to the Sportpalastrede (or read it rather) you will find a lot of the metaphors of self-defense and such as well. I know what you mean, international politics had changed in a way that made war anathema, but generally speaking even beofre that the shtick of "we are only defending ...

Another video of that rally
Funny how totalitarianism still is using the same playbook as in the 20th century
Just a shame they banned calling it a war, "Wollt ihr die totale Militäroperation?" just does not have the same ring to it.
