I'm pretty sure the wonder mechanic in AoE2 was the inspiration for trade monopoly. I actually think TM is better, because it forces you to control the map instead of building a wonder in the corner and camping with a million layers of wall.

Since DE is primarily a revamp of an existing game, I doubt they'll make any changes that are all that groundbreaking (aside from adding the new civs of course). But if they were to do so, I think making it cheaper/faster to go to Age 4 would be a cool addition. It's a very fun age in terms of units...
