Re: European politics
I have a theory that Putin waited for Merkel's coalition to leave power and hand things over to a coalition led by pacifist SPD. Because troops have been slowly massing at Ukraine's border since April last year, but they intensified close to the moment when the new coalition came into power in Germ...

Washington probably wants to start with this step as early as Monday. https://www.faz.net/a...

Re: French is a civ that has no advantage
French also potentially have the strongest artillery in the game with Gribeauval System boosting dmg by a whopping 25%. i think otto and china has stronger artillery buffs, though more cards I don't think so. Firstly, both need to invest more cards. Secondly, the single cards are all significantly ...

Re: European politics
Major opposition figures like Markus Söder (Bavarian prime minister, CSU) are quite Putin-friendly with a) demanding that sanctions shouldn't be too hard, b) arguing that Ukraine should never be part of NATO, and c) claiming that NordStream 2 should start operating in any case.

Re: French is a civ that has no advantage
France is totally playable both in single player as in team games. I recently played a lot of team games with France and never felt any real weaknesses. They have a solid economy and great cavalry. I also can't see the point on cuir train time. It's pretty much all I do after getting to age III. Jus...

Re: European politics
Maybe climate change could help with that. As far as I know, many of the more valuable resources are in tundra + mountaineous areas. And far away from any civilization/infrastructure. But I'm no expert.

Re: European politics
Give it another 15-20 years and Poland will have a higher GDP than Russia. Currently, there is zero important industrial, tech, or innovation players coming from Russia, except for the declining oil and gas industry. The Russian economy is largely unconnected to the major global supply chains.

Re: European politics
Doesn't sound like a clever move from Russia to threaten Germany with decreased gas supply. That would just raise public awareness of Germany's current dependency on Putin and facilitate large governmental programs towards renewables.

Re: European politics
I wouldn't expect reopened nuclear power plants even in a worst case scenario regarding Ukraine. Not even the Germany energy industry players themselves are in favor of such a change. It would just be a drastic boost for renewables + hydrogen.

Dutch is a fun language. Ziekenhuisopname sounds like a combination of German and English with Zieken = sick, huis = house, and opname = aufnahme.

Re: European politics
Putin is in an awkward position. He seems to realize that the European Union is now beginning to actually address climate change and reduction of co2 emissions on a larger scale. This outlook is extremely threatening for his regime given that Russia's finances depend to a good part on oil/gas extrac...

Re: European politics
That's the major point to me. There is not much to win with attacking Ukraine. Everything Putin could realistically want was already achieved with annexing the Crimea and forcing Kiev into a frozen conflict. I can't even imagine that a questionable success in a war with Ukraine could gain any inner ...

To me, it's just much more complicated with Russia and Stalinism. The perpetrators as much as the victims had varying origins, histories and ethnic backgrounds. Stalin himself wasn't an actual Russian, but from Georgia. It is not a simple "the Germans tried to kill all Jews in Europe". Eve...

Re: European politics
Talking about when Ukraine started to forge an own identity, I can recommend to read Tolstoi's 'War and Peace'. It's a fantastic read (except for the 100 pages on Russian nobility going on a hunt) and also gives nice hints on relations between Russians/Ukrainians, who you say are the same.
