It depends on what you spend the resources on: Economic buildings give you 20% back in XP, other buildings and units only 10%. Technology investments (other than stagecoach) like aging or market upgrades give no XP at all.

I agree that wood from age up isn't easy to spend early in all builds (naked FF in particular), so converting it to VS doesn't paint the whole picture. It would also be spent very early in the build, making this bank pay off the soonest.
Does Dutch ever go for a stable + 2 houses semi like e.g. Franc .....

If I understand this right, I think he kind of assumed that the bank wagon is free since its cost is not considered in the VS example - he's simply adding up the VS cost of the 3 remaining banks. How much XP does it take for the 3rd and 4th shipment, respectively?

Since the walking time is a variable, I think we can interpret as "time taken by the villager while neither gathering nor building", i.e. walking to the build site, arranging themselves around the foundation, and walking back to gather.

  1. Sounds fine.
  2. I don't think you can "catch up" on military with one building that's supposed to be always producing. You'll always be 2 batches behind in a colonial build, or 1 minute later on your semi. If the opponent outnumbers you by 10 units, you can easily lose more than ~100 resources .....

Your description makes sense. I don't know Dutch builds well enough to say anything about the specific numbers.

The tradeoff seems to be that the benchmark build you're comparing to receives 700w at 4:45 plus gather time. Your proposed build gets that wood about 1 minute later. Since you're spending .....

  • How many times did you run each number of vils?
  • How did you ensure that all vils started building at the same time, without repositioning themselves etc?

Way back in the day (2006-ish), the formula that went around was

Code: Select all

time = base * 3 / (2 + number of vils)


For 1 vil you get 3 / (2 + 1) = 1x the base build time.
For 2 vils you get 3 / (2 + 2) = 3/4 the base build time.
For 4 vils you get 3 / (4 + 2) = 1/2 the base build time.
And so on.

In my limited (1st Lt) understanding:

  • 4v 700w 700c: Slightly slower semi-FF with additional pop space during colonial (e.g. 2 batches of huss), TP, and/or second gold upgrade.
  • 4v 700c 700w: Quick semi-FF with 1 military building and 2 houses from age up, so limited to 40 pop. 700w is needed for pop sp .....

I don't think an RTS game (or MOBA, for that matter) needs "APM sinks". Starcraft is considered high APM because APM makes a big difference in unit control, not because it makes you perform multiple consecutive actions to create a building efficiently (AoE3 walls) or constantly manage your .....

Is it possible for EP to remove the native TP icon from the score?
That wouldn't change the gameplay, but it would require actual scouting to detect and prepare for a fast native rush rather than seeing it coming from a mile away.

Alternatively, what if the cost for pillars were set to 0? It would still be beneficial to delete them, but the difference isn't as big since only build time is affected.

Would it be possible to prevent pillar-only walls in some way so people can't just plop down a whole bunch of free pillars in that .....

I've been looking at China openings recently and found most of the build order discussions to revolve around getting 2 villages early and sending Northern Refugees, while lately the village+TP builds have become more popular.

In a village+TP opening, sending Northern Refugees feels meh, it's passable .....

Why do you put stagecoach on food and send food crates while gathering coin? Coin gathers a lot slower than food, why not get it from stagecoach/crates while your vils gather the food?

Based on this post the update seems to work (i.e. not break anything) on systems without any GPU as well. Does anyone have an AMD video card (Radeon, probably) and could check whether that works as well?

Seems there are two contrasting opinions about whether 4v 700c is beaten by 4v 700w 700c in the mirror or not. Maybe something like a BO5 matching up these two strategies on a few different maps can lead to some insig .....

In teaching/learning a new skill, I would generally aim for two things: Don't try to do too much at once, and aim to always have some sense of accomplishment.

With that in mind, I think starting with Huns in AoE2 or Ottomans in AoE3 is a nice shortcut to focus on some of the high-impact things first .....

I can relate to the feeling, but I think it's important to understand that a win rate of ~50% is expected when playing people around your skill level. Sometimes your opponent may have a particularly good game while yours isn't going too well, and even though you may feel you never had a chance it's .....
