Hide vill is the first things you need too learn if you want play spain :p . I have trie semi in an other game and i die in a same way ^^. Spain looks like more bad in this patch juste because all other civ get more value about balance map (maybe i am wrong, not expert on this patch).

This game is not particulary worth too watch, but what sort of things can i do for counter a simple rush?

India is not the best civ in all mu but its probably the most polyvalent.

Nobody is authority, but if one player with 2700 elo use one bo, its maybe because is playable. And the capacity to diversified her game play is one part of skills player.

Shmra use sff, sns too (and i think they are more better with china especially sns who played 100% china) for exemple. But iam not expert with china so i have no opinion.
Against jap, sff china was used commonly.

BR is probably the most polyvalent unit of all aoe games. They have any hard counter and this is probably the most cost effective unit age 2.

generaly skirm is good idea becouse spain have only piq/cav ship (this is stupid but...), but agaisnt player like black_XIII ff lancer is the best way.
You can ff eco (700gold, 700 wood, 5vilis) or ff rush with 8 piq insted of 5 vilis

Its necessary too take in consideration that some civ is more strong on bad map (like india, because their vilis don't cost food, and this is generally the limited factor).
