Tournament Format and Gameplay Rules

Pro Division Qualification & Seeding Rules

1.1 - The 32 players with the highest Elo per the 1v1 Supremacy leaderboard as of 23:59 GMT on May 7th will be seeded into the Pro Division Group Stage.

1.2 - Players in the Pro Division must sign up with their most known account name. Players may not change their account name after signing up and all tournament games must be played using that account name.

1.3 - The Pro Division Group Stage will consist of 8 groups with 4 players in each group. They will be seeded as follows:

Group A: Seeds 1, 16, 17, and 32
Group B: Seeds 2, 15, 18, and 31
Group C: Seeds 3, 14, 19, and 30
Group D: Seeds 4, 13, 20, and 29
Group E: Seeds 5, 12, 21, and 28
Group F: Seeds 6, 11, 22, and 27
Group G: Seeds 7, 10, 23, and 26
Group H: Seeds 8, 9, 24, and 25

1.4 - The group stage will follow the dual tournament format (GSL). The four players of each group are split into pairs for the initial round. The winners of the initial round advance to the Winner's Match. The victor of this Winner's Match secures a spot in the Bracket Stage. The losers of the initial round face each other in the Loser's Match. The loser of this Loser's Match is eliminated from the tournament. The loser of the Winner’s Match and the winner of the Loser’s Match then face each other for the final match of the Group Stage. The winner of this final match secures a spot in the Bracket Stage. The loser of the final match places third in the group and is entitled to the 17th-24th place earnings.

Amateur Division

2.1 - All players who did not qualify for the Pro Division will participate in the Amateur Division, which will be a grand-scale single-elimination bracket tournament.

Gameplay Rules

3.1 - Every game must be played using Aizamk's "BasicSpecMod Map Set C" mod.

3.2 - Every game must be played using Game Rules: Standard, Game Type: Supremacy and the default lobby settings

3.3 - Players must set their team to "?".

3.4 - Every game must be recorded and submitted. If a game is not recorded and/or submitted, it must be replayed regardless of the result.

3.5 - The server region in Pro Division matches will be decided by the tournament administration based on the server pings screenshots provided at sign-ups.

3.6 - For Amateur Division matches, the server region is agreed upon by the players. If an agreement cannot be reached, the tournament administration will determine the server region. Players may agree to use multiple different server regions, in which case they should also alternate hosting games.

3.7 - Pro Division series winners should submit recorded games to the #recorded-games channel in the tournament discord server. Amateur Division series winners should submit match results and recorded games via eso-community's match results submitter.

3.8 - When a player disconnects from the match BEFORE 2 minutes of game-time, the players can restart and replay the game. When the opponent does not agree to restart, the outcome of the game will be determined by the tournament administration.

3.9 - When a player disconnects from the match AFTER 2 minutes of game-time, the players can restart and replay the game. When the opponent does not agree to restart, the player who lost connection will be given a map loss.

3.10 - Every player may restart a game BEFORE the 2-minute mark when necessary in regards to resource-related issues. The recorded game of the restart must be saved and submitted with the final results of the match. The admins reserve the right to review the recorded game afterward to determine if a player abused this right.

3.11 - Players must be respectful to each other when selecting civilizations during the first game in a series. Players cannot intentionally change to unfair match-ups, or otherwise be difficult to agree with. The tournament administration reserves the right to two possible outcomes. 1) If one player is deemed challenging, then that player will be forced to pick their civilization first. 2) If both players are disagreeable, then a blind pick will be enforced.

3.12 - Every player must respect their opponent and organizers. Misbehavior** will result in a warning and can lead to disqualification. Racism and/or insults will not be tolerated. More information regarding this can be found in the Disqualification Rules section.

Civilization Restrictions

Amateur Division & Pro Division Group Stage and Play-in Round (Round of 16):

4.1 - Once you have won with a civilization, you may not use it again for the rest of the series. Losing a game does not disable a player’s civilization - this means that there isn’t a limit to the number of times a civilization can be played, provided the player has not won using it.

4.2 - For the 1st game in a series, players agree on a civilization matchup. For each subsequent game, the winner of the previous game selects their civilization first. This pick is final and is locked in. The opponent chooses their civilization afterwards, aka "the counterpick".

4.3 - In a Best-of-3, you must win with 2 different civilizations.
In a Best-of-5, you must win with 3 different civilizations.
In a Best-of-7, you must win with 4 different civilizations.
Example (Best-of-5)
Pro Division Bracket Stage Rules (Quarter-Finals and beyond):

5.1 - Prior to the match, the players will hold a civilization and map draft with a tournament admin. For best-of-7 series', each player will draft 5 civilizations and 3 maps from the available pools. For the the best-of-9 grand finals, each player will draft 6 civilizations and 4 maps from the available pools. Maps may only be played ONCE per series, but civilizations may be played until the player has won using that civilization. Once a civilization or map has been selected in the draft, it is no longer available to be chosen by the other player with the exception of the last civilization pick for each player. This selection is considered a POWER PICK and may be used to select a civilization that is already in the other player's roster.
Draft Example
5.2 - Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and Bronze

For best-of-7 series', the first and fourth map will be fixed. These maps will be (1) Fraser River and (4) Colorado

The players will agree to a matchup in game 1 by selecting one civilization each from their drafted pool. The loser of game 1 will then select the map for game 2 from their drafted pool. The winner of game 1 will be the first to select their civilization and the game 1 loser will counter pick. When game 4 is reached, the map will be locked regardless of who lost game 3, however, the winner of game 3 must still lock their civilization first. Selection for game 5 will follow the rules of loser of game 4 selecting the map, and the winner of game 4 locking their civilization first and the rest of the series will continue in this manner.
Example (Best-of-7):
5.3 - Grand Finals

For the grand finals, the first, fourth, and seventh maps will be fixed. These maps are (1) Fraser River, (4) Colorado and (7) Mongolia

The players will agree to a matchup in game 1 by selecting one civilization each from their drafted pool. The loser of game 1 will then select the map for game 2 from their drafted pool. The winner of game 1 will be the first to select their civilization and the game 1 loser will counter pick. When game 4 is reached, the map will be Gran Chaco regardless of who lost game 3, however, the winner of game 3 must still lock their civilization first. Selection for game 5 will follow the rules of loser of game 4 selecting the map, and the winner of game 4 locking their civilization first and the rest of the series will continue in this manner.
Example (Best-of-9):
Map Pool

The tournament map pool consists of 14 maps total. Maps should be played in order from left-to-right. There will be no map vetoes in the group stage or play-in round. The full tournament map pool is included in Aizamk's "BasicSpecMod Mapset C" mod.
Full Map Pool
The map pool for each round is as follows:
Pro Division Map Pool
Amateur Division Map Pool

Disqualification Rules

6.1 - Any intentional use, or attempted use, by a player of any bugs, exploits, or cheats may result in a disqualification and/or tournament ban. The tournament administration, at their discretion, will determine bugs, exploits, or cheats.

6.2 - Except for officially supported mods, external software and game modifications are forbidden. The tournament administration reserves the right to disqualify a player for use of any modifications to gain an unfair advantage.

6.3 - Acceptable hotkey modifications should follow the "1 input = 1 output" rule. This means that a custom hotkey does not queue multiple actions that would normally require several keys.

6.4 - Forbidden modifications/software include but are not limited to: Map Hacks, Trainers, OOS / Intentional Lag (stacked downloads or other game crashing exploits), and zoom modification.

6.5 - "Smurfing", playing for another user, or having another user play your match for you, will result in a disqualification and tournament ban for both parties involved.

6.6 - Any tampering with the integrity of the ladder, sign-up, or seeding process will result in a disqualification and may result in a tournament ban. The tournament administration reserves the right to apply this rule retroactively.

6.7 - If you suspect your opponent has violated any of the player integrity rules, finish the game and submit it for review with an explanation of why you think the game was unfair. If the tournament administration finds someone to be guilty of cheating, the cheater will be disqualified from the tournament and subject to a tournament ban.

6.8 - All users are prohibited from influencing or manipulating a tournament game or series so that the outcome is determined by anything other than its merits.

6.9 - One-Touch Forfeiture: once a player has expressed that they have forfeited a match, they will be disqualified from the tournament and not permitted to continue playing. Having an insufficient reason for forfeiture may result in a tournament ban.

6.10 - When a player is disqualified, they have no right to claim any prize money.

6.11 - Players must play out every match in their assigned tournament series. Noncompliance may result in a forfeiture of any winnings and restrictions from participating in future ESOC events.

**Misbehaviour includes excessive trash-talking and disrespecting players, casters, and admins. More severe misbehaviour such as racism will not be tolerated in any form and may result in disqualification and a tournament ban.

The discipline procedure for misbehaviour will be:

1) First Warning
2) Final Warning
3) Disqualification

A first warning is issued by a tournament administrator and is a yellow light to cease offending behaviour. Continued misbehaviour will escalate to an official warning.

A final warning is issued by a tournament administrator and is a red light to cease offending behaviour. Continued misbehaviour will result in the player's disqualification and may result in a tournament ban. A player will only receive one final warning during the course of the tournament; should their misbehaviour continue, the tournament administration reserves the right to disqualify them at any time.

Tournament Coordination

Scheduling

7.1 - ALL PLAYERS: Please review the ESOC Guide to Scheduling!

7.2 - If a player is more than 15 minutes late to a scheduled match or no-shows without giving the opponent fair warning, then they will choose their civilization first in Game 1 when the match is eventually played.

Pro Division

7.3 - After sign-ups close, the 32 Pro Division participants will be invited to a discord server for tournament coordination.

7.4 - Because the tournament will be casted from recorded games, matches can be completed at any time within the round deadline. Matches are encouraged to be completed as soon as possible and ahead of schedule.

7.5 - The winner of the series should submit recorded games to the #recorded-games channel in the tournament discord server.

Amateur Division

7.6 - Forum scheduling threads will be generated every week at the start of the round.

7.7 - Players must respond with the times they are available to play in their dedicated scheduling thread. Players will then play out their games on the given maps.

7.8 - The winner of the series should submit match results and recorded games via eso-community's match results submitter.

7.9 - Posts in scheduling topics will be considered along with interaction with admins when making decisions regarding scheduling. Other communications will not be considered.

Streaming

8.1 - Tournament matches will be broadcast each weekend on ESOCTV and EGCTV.

Group Stage Weekend 1: May 15th - May 16th
Group Stage Weekend 2: May 22th - May 23rd
Group Stage Weekend 3: May 29th - May 30th
Play-in Round June 5th - June 6th
Round of 8: June 12th - June 13th
Semi-Finals: June 19th
Finals & Bronze: June 20th

Amateur Div. Semi-Finals: June 26th - June 27th
Amateur Div. Finals & Bronze: July 3rd - July 4th

8.2 - Pro Division players are not permitted to stream their own tournament matches without prior authorization from the tournament administration. This includes streaming live or recorded games to discord. A player who streams their match without receiving prior authorization from the tournament administration will be penalized 25% of their prize money and may be subject to a tournament ban and/or further penalties. Amateur Division players are permitted to stream their tournament matches at any time.

8.3 - Only casters that have been authorized by the tournament administration will be permitted to stream matches on ESOCTV and EGCTV.

8.4 - Some tournament matches may be authorized to streamers to be casted on their personal channels.

Can someone explain how the pairings will work, say for instance in Group A would Seed 1 fight Seed 32 in their first match and winner advances to bracket stage and 16 would vs 17 and the winner advances to bracket stage and losers will fight for another bracket place between them?

Once a civilization or map has been selected in the draft, it is no longer available to be chosen by the other player.

does this mean what I think it means? no overlap in civ pools? that seems insane, I feel like that has never been done before.

The draft will begin with the higher seed player picking their map first, then proceeding in a snake fashion as shown below:
Player A map pick
Player B map pick
Player B map pick
Player A map pick
Player A map pick
Player B Map pick

After the map draft, the players will follow the same procedure to draft civilizations.
Player A civilization pick

If I understand correctly, the higher elo player picks first. And btw @n0el I think it matters for literally anyone. even if for example it's samwise vs kaiserklein, one of them getting their hands on france but the other isn't etc will matter

I don't like this kind of rule when the stakes are so high.

Anyone who is known for being one of the best with a particular civ can easily get screwed by this rule. The top 8 is no exception: for example, Kynesie with Portuguese & Japan, Lukas with China and Lakota, myself with China, iamturk with Japan, etc.

Now imagine a situation where I play against Lukas. Whoever picks first will pick China and have a big advantage because they've completely denied the other player's best civ.

Same thing happens in Kynesie vs Turk. Whoever gets to pick Japan has a huge advantage.

It's only flawed if your crutch is a few civs, if you're a top player you should be able to play all civs to a high standard.

Like it's so interesting seeing GUA play brit 3x in a row in a BO5 vs a better player as it's one of three civs he plays, or it's so fun seeing Kynesie play Port or Japan at least twice in litreally every series.

Remeber that the point of tournaments isn't just to throw money at top end players. View count matters both funding new tournaments and expanding esoc, so the more interesting we can make a tournament for viewers the better. THE PRIZE POOL IS THE INCENTIVE TO PLAY NOT THE REASON THE TOURNAMENT IS HOSTED.

I think having at least some sort of civ rules is always great, I don't wanna see someone play their best civ over and over, I like the rule of being able to win with something just once in a series. But I also think it's cool to see people on their best civs, not on their meh civ because their best civs got taken away. If you get to a bo7 or bo9 you already need 4 or 5 civs to win and your civ pool already starts to matter. now you'll need like 10 civs if your opponent takes your best
