Welcome to general chat, come shoot shit talking about anything and everything AOE4. If it isn't big enough to make a thread about, come and post it in here.

Personally, I'm hyped as hell for it, primarily because I know that it will be supported to a very high level and look forward to being able to have all the luxuries that AOE2 has on a newer engine (map veto system, live games / replays that work at 100% speed / optimized game / constant balance + features being added / map rotation / large playerbase.

I read the reddit a lot and also what was written on this forum, and honestly my primary feeling with regards to aoe4 is annoyed. I'm annoyed at all the haters. Game looks good to me and I'm excited for it.

Also I get the impression that the few people on esoc that know more are very positive about it.

It's hard to be sure until the game is out and we can see for ourselves how design, support and polish are upon release. I'm cautiously optimistic but these days any game release is plagued with bugs.

Same, every time I read the Reddit bullshit I get pretty heated. People act like they are supreme experts on game design and ignore the fact of everything that has happened behind the scenes.

I think reddit is a pretty nice platform. But random strangers on the internet are just significantly more bothersome than the inner circle of friends that you effectively handpicked to be people you don't find bothersome.

It's not like some ESOC opinions on aoe4 don't frustrate me. I feel like lots of people have very unrealistic expectations combined with surprisingly little knowledge of what games are usually like. I'm sure tons of people will be unreasonably disappointed with aoe4, even if it turns out to be great.

"French Traders have the unique ability to bring back any resources needed, a valuable trait during a resource shortage."
This line in the description of the French is interesting to me. There seems to be a trade system, and I somehow dont think it will be like aoe2's trade. My personal guess is that traders can move between your market and aoe3 style trading posts out on the map.

One of the reasons for thinking this is that basically all rts games make you go out on the map for resources. Since its confirmed that aoe4 has infinite gold mechanics and is otherwise much like aoe2, I bet that this trading will also work in 1v1s. Its just a guess, but if it works like I guessed that would be really thematic/immersive but probably also just a good map control mechanic.

This screenshot seems to agree with that theory too.

There's also a screenshot of a sacred site on the minimap. I'm thinking they've taken the idea of aoe3's trade posts making you interested in the map and controlling the map and have applied it to aoe2-style gameplay. I love that idea, so I really hope I'm right on this one.

That's sad. I think that the alliances system used by african civs is quite promising. A Holy Roman Empire could advance between the ages, e.g., by choosing between Eastern Franks/Swabians/Saxons/Bavarians/Westfalians or Italians/Burgundians/Czechs/Wallonians/Frisians.
